Texas sinks Cyclones at home 81-75

Kristin Scott

AMES — The Iowa State women’s basketball team lost to Texas 81-75 on Monday at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones (9-4, 1-1) led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but the Longhorns outscored Iowa State 21-12 and 27-17 in the second and third quarters to gain control of the game.

“After getting off to a good start they punched us in the mouth and we couldn’t handle it,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I saw [Texas head coach Karen Aston’s] press conference after [Texas’ 65-63 TCU loss] and she literally called her team out about how they played in the third quarter. The whole halftime I told our kids ‘You better get ready because they are coming’ and they did. That’s good coaching on their part and great play on their part. That’s what separated the game. We kept playing until the end and I’m proud of our kids for that and to get it to six points. But that part in the third quarter pretty much knocked us out.”

Despite shooting 47.5 percent from the field and outrebounding Texas 41-31, the difference in the night came down to turnovers. Iowa State gave away 17 turnovers with Texas coming away with 11 steals. Texas (9-5, 1-1) also notably outscored the Cyclones 29-10 from points coming off the bench.

“Texas got into us as we knew they would,” Fennelly said. “You have to have good guard play when you play against Texas. When the game gets that physical there is nothing you can do unless you can handle the ball. Our guard play was not good enough by any stretch. You can’t turn the ball over 17 times.”

Kristin Scott led the team with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds. Ashley Joens also posted a double-double with 18 points scored and 10 rebounds.

Iowa State will go on the road next to face Oklahoma on Saturday with tipoff at 1 p.m.
