REGIONAL SOFTBALL: Cougars clip Comets in quarterfinals

ACKLEY — The Class 1A No. 14 AGWSR softball team scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and that was enough to outlast BCLUW for a 2-0 victory in Wednesday’s Region 7 quarterfinal.

The host Cougars (10-4) hit three doubles off BCLUW hurler Abby Feldpausch in their first at-bat, as MaKenna Kuper, Rachel Sicard and Taylor Sperfslage each hit two-baggers.

Feldpausch gave up only one more hit the rest of the way, but that was all AGWSR needed. Sicard tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out six and walking none in the complete-game victory.

Kaylee Grant hit a single in the third inning and Kennedy Williams led off the fourth with a double, but neither made it around the bases for BCLUW (6-12). It was just the third time the Comets were shut out this season.

Feldpausch finished with six strikeouts and two walks over six innings, surrendering just four hits in the loss.

Kuper went 2-for-3 with a run to lead the AGWSR offense. The Cougars advance to face Janesville (9-7) in Friday’s 7 p.m. regional semifinal in Ackley.

Williamsburg 12, South Tama 0, 3 innings

WILLIAMSBURG — Peyton Driscoll pitched a three-inning perfect game, striking out eight of the nine batters she faced as the Class 3A No. 3 Williamsburg softball team ended South Tama’s season with a 12-0 setback in Wednesday’s Region 5 quarterfinal.

Driscoll also retired the only batter she didn’t strike out, getting a grounder back to the circle to silence South Tama (3-21) in the first round of postseason play.

Elle Ridgeway homered and drove in three runs, while Carly Campbell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Raiders into the regional semifinals. Williamsburg (21-4) hosts Roland-Story (10-10) on Friday night.

On the other half of the bracket, West Marshall (9-8) fell to Solon 13-3. The host Spartans (20-13) advance to meet Benton Community (14-8) on Friday in Solon.
