SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat softball dropped by J-Hawks

URBANDALE — The Marshalltown softball team suffered doubleheader defeats at the hands of Urbandale on Friday night, falling 10-0 in five innings and 10-1.

Urbandale’s Bri Tigges went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer to lead the J-Hawks to victory in the opening game. She finished 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Pitcher Isabella Stanton allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Marshalltown’s Kyra Feldman hit a third-inning double, Paige Wertzberger walked in the fourth, and Emma McWherter had a two-out single in the fifth. Kailee Pollard surrendered 10 hits in four innings for the loss.

In the second game, the Bobcats (2-19) managed four hits and their only run of the night but couldn’t close in on the J-Hawks.

Autumn Finch had a pinch-hit double while Avery Mull, Erica Johnson and Wertzberger each had a single for the Marshalltown offense. Finch doubled to lead off the sixth and later scored on Mull’s two-out single up the middle.

Mull took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs on nine hits and nine walks while striking out five.

Marshalltown closes the regular season with a doubleheader on Monday at Des Moines Hoover.

Trojans no-hit Colo-NESCO softball

MCCALLSBURG — The West Marshall softball team got a no-hitter from pitcher Loran Nicholson as the Trojans toppled Colo-NESCO 13-0 in three innings here Friday.

Nicholson struck out only one but didn’t allow a hit. The only Colo-NESCO batter to reach base was Rylee Upchurch, who was hit by an 0-2 pitch to lead off the bottom of the third inning.

West Marshall (7-7) rapped out nine hits in the win, led by Renae Schaper and Morgan Cripps with two apiece. Both hit a double and drove in two runs.

The Trojans scored five, three and five runs in their three at-bats to finish off the non-conference game between neighbors by the mercy rule.

West Marshall hosts winless Newton (0-16) on Monday night in State Center to close the regular season.
