PREP WRESTLING: Redhawks victorious in North Mahaska Tournament

NEW SHARON — the North Tama Redhawks came out on top in the team standings of the North Mahaska Tournament Saturday with a score of 166.5 thanks to big performances from Noah Weber, Xander Bradley and Cale Bradley, among others.

Case Monat finished second in class at 106 pounds with two wins and a loss in the final. Cale Bradley won the 126 pound bracket after pinning opponents in the semifinals and finals. At 160 pounds, Ashton Bradley finished second after pinning his first two opponents. He was beaten via pin in the finals. Noah Weber completed the win at 170 pounds with a pin over Blake Juhl of Pekin.

Heavyweight Xander Bradley finished second, winning two matches before getting pinned in the final by Trace Goemaat of North Mahaska.

Third place finishers included Christian Dronebarger (113 pounds), Nathan Kucera (138 pounds) and Logan Rausch (152 pounds).

West Marshall second at BGM tournament

BROOKLYN — the West Marshall wrestling team finished second at the 10-team Corky Stuart BGM tournament Saturday afternoon with 193 team points, only coming in behind Monticello (200 points).

Leading the way for the Trojans was Austin Pfantz at 170 pounds, who beat Iowa Valley’s Brody Hoyt by a 16-3 major decision in the finals. Grant Nason joined him as a winner at 195 pounds, winning in the finals against BGM’s Jermaine Kane via a 21-2 major decision. Kameron Malloy at 182 pounds finished in second place, beating his first two opponents with pins before losing in the finals against Ronan Peach of Iowa Valley by 3-2 decision. At heavyweight, Elijah Meester went 2-1 and lost his final match via a 13-9 decision to Tipton’s Nile Schuett.

The Trojans had a slew of third-place finishers at their respective weights. JD Downs finished third at 126 pounds with a 3-1 record, while at 132 Caden Vellinga went 3-1 and won his consolation match with HLV’s Brody Sternhagen via 15-7 decision.

Luke Coulter finished third at 160 pounds with a 3-1 record and consolation pin over Jesup’s Bryce Gleiter. At 220 pounds Sam Schaper finished in third place with a pin over AP-GC’s Carson Troyna.

East Marshall/GMG competes in 17-team tourney

VAN HORNE — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team finished mid-pack in the Jerry Eckenrod Invitational hosted by Benton on Saturday. EM/GMG scored 81 team points and finished four spots behind eighth-placed Union.

Notable finishers included the Class 2A No. 2 at 126 pounds, Dominic Ridout. Ridout won his first two matches via pin before falling short in the final against Class 3A No. 1 Drake Ayala of Fort Dodge, getting pinned in just under two minutes.

At 220 pounds, Class 2A No. 7 Connor Murty finished second in his weight class as well. Murty won his first match via a 4-1 decision, second match over Class 3A No. 6 Christian Nunley of West Delaware. Class 2A No. 2 Kobe Simon of West Liberty beat Murty with a 7-4 decision.

Tim Benson finished in fifth place at 152 pounds. Starting the day with two wins, one of them a decision over Class 2A No. 11 Parker Terronez of Assumption, he finished the day 3-2 and lost the third-place match by getting pinned in 5:20.

Logan Walton finished the day with a 2-3 record and sixth place finish at 182 pounds, buoyed by a win over Class 2A No. 7 Marcus Beatty of Independence.
