Indian Hills handcuffs MCC

Zion Obanla

OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team scored a season-low in Wednesday’s 66-45 loss to NJCAA Division I No. 6 Indian Hills at the Hellyer Student Life Center.

The visiting Tigers (9-13, 0-2) set new season-lows by shooting just 28.8 percent from the field, 19 percent from 3-point range and scoring fewer than 50 points for the first time. MCC suffered from scoring droughts as long as nearly six minutes and fell to 0-2 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference action.

Indian Hills (20-2, 2-0) didn’t score for the first 4 minutes, 56 seconds of the game but only trailed 6-2 by that point. Marshalltown led by as many as eight points in the first half but trailed at the half, 31-24.

MCC scored seven of the first nine points in the second half to climb back within two, 33-31, but scoring droughts of 3:27, 3:35 and finally 5:59 sealed the Tigers’ fate.

Zion Obanla recorded his seventh double-double of the season to lead MCC, piling up 13 points and 10 rebounds in the team’s sixth loss in its last seven games. Gedeon Shango scored 11 points and pulled down nine boards, Trey Sinegal added seven points and Mekki Sisk stepped in off the bench to get seven points as well.

The Tigers shot 28.8 percent (17-for-59) from the field and 19 percent (4-for-21) from 3-point range — both season lows.

Four players scored in double figures for Hills: Don McHenry (13), Davontae Hall (12), Ryan Myers (10) and Enoch Kalambay (10).

MCC returns to the road Saturday, facing Highland CC in a 3 p.m. game at Freeport, Ill.
