East Marshall rally snuffed out by E-B-F

EDDYVILLE — The East Marshall softball team saw its seventh-inning rally robbed as a running catch by left fielder Whitney Klyn helped Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont withstand the Mustangs’ late surge for a 4-2 win in Friday’s thrilling Class 2A Region 7 semifinal.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (18-12) led for the entire contest, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning. The Rockets’ first three batters reached, including Klyn’s two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game.

E-B-F tacked on a run in the fifth before East Marshall (20-13) mounted its comeback in the top of the seventh.

Alivia Neuroth reached safely with a one-out walk, and Makayla Hala took over for her on the bases. Mylie Rasmusson got on via error, and Makayla Kerber slapped an RBI single off the third baseman’s glove and into left field.

After a pop-out off the bat of Morgan Neuroth, Ava Bringmann walked to load the bases and Rayne McIlrath watched four straight balls go by for an RBI walk.

Peyton Grabenbauer fell into a 1-2 hole before blasting a line drive to deep left-center field, but Klyn tracked it down and prevented the Mustangs from completing the comeback.

Bella Noble got the win in the circle for E-B-F, allowing three hits but six walks while striking out four. Neuroth took the loss, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out six.

Neuroth had two of the Mustangs’ three hits. Kate Shafer went 3-for-4 to lead the Rockets, who advance to face top-ranked Iowa City Regina (26-8) in Monday’s Region 7 finale in Iowa City.

Starting at $4.38/week.
