REINBECK — Isaac Clark wasn’t interested in extra innings.

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck junior stepped to the plate on Saturday night against H-L-V with that intention and delivered the game-winning hit for a 4-3 Rebel triumph over the Warriors in a Class 1A District 7 quarterfinal game at the Steve Tscherter Complex in Reinbeck.

G-R (25-11) will play GMG at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5.

H-L-V extended the game initially in the seventh inning on a two-out, two-RBI single from Camden Kennebeck that tied the game at 3-all.

“I didn’t want a walk, I just wanted to win the game there,” Clark said.

Drew Eilers, who had reached on a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, came around to score when Clark smashed a liner that took a fortunate bounce over the H-L-V left fielder’s head to ensure that Eilers would reach home safely.

“The back of our order has been on base all week,” said G-R senior Will Kiburis. “I was pretty confident with them [batting in the seventh]. I thought we still had a really good chance.”

Kiburis hit the pitch limit in the seventh inning after striking out 17 batters with one earned run on four hits, two walks and one hit batter.

While he ended up with a no-decision, it was an impressive performance in a steady rain that soaked the teams from start to finish on Saturday.

“It was tough out there,” Kiburis said. “I was just trying to pound the strike zone and force them to swing the bat, force some action and get some outs.”

Nick Tscherter came in with two outs and a runner on second. After surrendering back-to-back hits to tie the game, he was able to end the threat by forcing a popout to second.

“Their top two hitters were just pests,” G-R head coach Scott Kiburis said of H-L-V. “They competed and put up a lot of resistance there.”

While Will wanted to force the action, Scott noted making the Warriors swing and miss was the most productive outcome.

“They don’t advance runners on strikeouts,” Scott said. “We got up early and never felt like we were defeated, but it would’ve been nice to get a fourth run across.”

Tscherter and Logan Giesking brought home Kiburis and Egesdal in the first inning and Eilers put a ball in play that scored Austin Gehring for a 3-1 lead after five innings, a crucial run considering the events of the seventh inning.

“We just know we have to hit the ball,” Clark said. “We can’t give up even when we have slow starts, we’ve just got to hit the ball and make the play.”

Clark, a soccer standout for the 1A state runner-ups from Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck ended up not getting consistent practice or playing time due to the busy soccer schedule earlier in the season.

“Now he’s back to where he was midseason last year,” Scott said. “That was awesome.”

Will Kiburis won’t be available to pitch in Wednesday’s game with GMG, but the rest of G-R’s pitching staff, which has been putting the reps in for the Rebels’ busy schedule this summer, will get a chance to shine against the Wolverines.

“We’ll do our best to play defense behind whoever we put out there,” Scott Kiburis said.
