Bobcats splash past Polar Bears

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ swimming team didn’t have the benefit or the usual scoring buffer the Bobcat divers provide. As it turned out, MHS didn’t need the scoring boost on this night.

Marshalltown won eight of 11 events in the pool and defeated Des Moines North 103-62 on Tuesday night.

Averie Wittkop and Lesli Waltermire both played a part in four event victories for the Bobcats. Both were members of the winning 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays, and both claimed a pair of individual wins. Wittkop topped the podium in the 100 and 200 freestyle races, while Waltermire won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Libby Meyer was the only other Bobcat to claim an individual event, winning the 500 freestyle in a time of 6 minutes, 29.83 seconds.

The winning foursome in the 200 medley relay was Wittkop, Rachel Case, Waltermire and Leia Hernandez, while it was Waltermire, Kate Jones, Hernandez and Wittkop at the top of the heap in the 200 freestyle relay. The triumphant 400 meter relay squad included Case, Maisie Gummert, Meyer and Jones.

The Bobcats host their annual invitational on Saturday at the MHS pool, starting with diving competition at 9:30 a.m. and swimming at noon.

Starting at $4.38/week.
