MHS settles for silver at Boone Invite

BOONE — The Marshalltown boys’ swimming squad emerged with seven runner-up finishes in taking second place at Boone’s 62nd annual Toreador Relays on Saturday at Boone High School.

The Bobcats placed between second and fourth in all but one of the 12 events, with each of the six runner-up results coming behind a counterpart from Carroll. The Tigers won the team title with 45 points, followed by Marshalltown (27), Boone (23), Atlantic (16), Fort Dodge (10) and Williamsburg (6).

MHS swimmers recorded 40 personal-best times and 13 lifetime bests according to head coach Mike Loupee.

“We swam fairly well,” he said. “I felt we were flat in a few races. Need to bring more intensity to meets.”

Loupee credited Sam Greazel and Charles Gilbertson for their performances on Saturday. The duo combined to finish second in the 2×200-yard medley relay in a time of 4 minutes, 30.40 seconds.

Gilbertson teamed with Kaden Case to place second in the 2×100 butterfly, while Greazel and Jacob Seberger got second in the 2×100 breaststroke.

Cohen Thatcher, Greazel, Gilbertson and Michael Lechnir opened with silver in the 200 medley relay, while Lechnir, Kade Randall, Gilbertson and Lincoln Barker were second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Randall and Barker teamed up to take second in the 2×200 freestyle, and the duo also picked up second in the 2×500 freestyle.

The MHS swim team is back in action Thursday with a home dual against Des Moines East, and the Bobcat Invite is on Saturday.
