SPORTS SHORTS: Late burst guides Spartan girls past Oelwein

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center girls basketball team used a fourth-quarter scoring run to escape a challenge from Oelwein, winning 48-39 at Grundy Center High School on Thursday.

The Spartans, entering the Class 2A IGHSAU rankings at 14th this week, head to the new year at 9-1 and riding a seven-game winning streak. Oelwein fell to 3-7.

The teams were tied at 35-all midway through the fourth quarter when an Ellery Luhring 3-point play sparked a 10-2 Grundy Center run that included buckets for Luhring and Carlie Willis as well as a corner 3-pointer from Lucy Lebo.

Willis finished with 15 points and Luhring and Lebo chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively. Oelwein’s McKinzie See led all scorers with 19 points.

East Marshall girls outlast Comet comeback

CONRAD — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team withstood BCLUW’s second-half rally for a 45-35 victory in Thursday’s game between former conference rivals.

The host Mustangs (5-7) saw their nine-point halftime lead trimmed to three, 32-29, going into the fourth quarter before pulling away again.

Morgan Neuroth scored a game-high 24 points to lead East Marshall. Bailey Grant finished wth nine points, while Ava Bringmann had five points, six rebounds and nine steals. Delaney Ryan added five points off the bench as well.

BCLUW was led by Klayre Gallentine’s 12 points, powered by three 3-pointers. Grace Farnsworth added 10 points and 14 boards. Sydney Anderson scored eight points.

Grundy Center boys win 6th in a row

GRUNDY CENTER — Brayden Wallis’ 13 points led a balanced scoring attack in Grundy Center’s 54-29 win over Oelwein on Thursday at Grundy Center High School.

Tate Jirovsky added 12 points for the Spartans (7-2) and Judd Jirovsky and Colin Gordon scored nine points each. Tiernan Vokes chipped in with eight points.

Grundy Center outscored the Huskies 32-14 in the second half.

Wheater, Edel lead Mustangs in home triangular

LE GRAND — The East Marshall/GMG/Meskwaki boys wrestling team suffered a pair of North Iowa Cedar League defeats in a home triangular Thursday night.

The Mustangs (1-13, 1-7 NICL) fell to Union Community, 72-12, and then Hudson, 54-30, to close the evening. Union topped Hudson in between, 60-24.

Drew Wheater (190 pounds) and Johnathan Edel (215) both went 2-0 on the night to lead East Marshall, with Wheater scoring two wins by pinfall. He flattened Union’s Eric Zac in 48 seconds and Hudson’s Jaedyn Heasley in 4:52. Edel pinned Hudson’s Carler Ites in 1:26 and received a forfeit from Union.

Each of the Mustangs’ five wins against Hudson were pins. Cade Burchland (106), Cooper Lenz (120) and Xavier Slifer (126) all scored six team points with pins.
