Sisters Mia and Destiny Sao-Martinez combined for eight 3-pointers and 37 points to power the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team to a 63-40 victory over the William Penn junior varsity on Monday night at the Student Activity Center.

The win snapped MCC’s 14-game losing skid, which dated back two months. The Tigers (3-23) scored their last win on Dec. 11, 2023, at home against Faith Baptist Bible College.

Mia Sao-Martinez led the aerial assault for MCC, finishing with career-highs of five 3-pointers and 21 points. Destiny added three 3-pointers and 16 points for the Tigers.

MCC led 14-8 after the opening quarter and pulled ahead for a 32-19 halftime advantage. Mia scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the third period to help the Tigers put their first win since December on ice.

Ashari Thrower added eight points and Tarah Campbell chipped in seven off the bench.

Jasmine Davis led the William Penn JV with 10 points.

The MCC women are back at home again Wednesday night with a 5:30 p.m. game against No. 6 Iowa Western and Saturday at 1 p.m. against Southeastern.
