Former Tiger Shango killed in car crash
TEXAS COUNTY, Mo. — Multiple news reports on Monday confirmed the overnight death of former Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball player Gedeon Mori Shango.
Shango, 22, was a 6-foot-8, 185-pound center from Kinshasa, Congo, who played for the MCC Tigers from 2021-23. MCC head coach Ryan Flack confirmed Shango’s death on Monday.
Shango was killed in a single-car crash northeast of his hometown of Cabool, Mo., on Sunday at approximately 11:30 p.m. Reports indicate that Shango’s vehicle, a 2008 Pontiac Torrent, ran off Highway AC about six miles northeast of Cabool and overturned, ejecting the driver.
Shango was pronounced dead at the scene by Texas County Sheriff Scott Lindsey at 12:51 a.m. Monday morning.
As a member of the MCC men’s basketball team, Shango started in 56 of his 61 games played for the Tigers, averaging 8.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in his two-year career.
