SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs go 1-2 at BGM Tournament

BROOKLYN — The Class 2A No. 9 East Marshall softball team dropped back-to-back games at the BGM Tournament on Saturday before bouncing back with a win.

The Mustangs (10-4) had their four-game win streak snapped by Roland-Story in a 10-9 defeat, and the host Bears handed East Marshall its most decisive loss of the season, 6-3. The Mustangs rebounded to take down Twin Cedars 11-3 in their finale.

The opener against Roland-Story was a bit of a roller coaster. The Norse opened with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, but East Marshall countered with three in the second and six in the fourth to take a 9-8 lead.

Roland-Story (8-3) got the last laugh, however, with two runs in the sixth, and closed the door on the Mustangs in the seventh. A two-run, two-out single by Kate Berggren was the go-ahead hit for the Norse in the sixth.

East Marshall pitcher Peyton Grabenbauer was tagged for 10 runs on 15 hits and four walks while striking out four in the loss. Roland-Story’s Mylie Geise gave up nine hits and eight walks, striking out three, but got the win as the Mustangs stranded nine runners on base.

Delaney Ryan was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs to lead East Marshall, while Grabenbauer was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

Five unearned runs was the Mustangs’ undoing against BGM (10-3). The Bears scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second, benefiting from errors both times.

East Marshall got to within 5-3 with two runs in the third. Ryan led off with a single, Gianna Boswell walked, and Vaeda Bryan plated a run with her sacrifice fly. Ashtyn Wheater followed with her second RBI single of the game, but BGM got out of the jam.

East Marshall left the bases loaded in the fourth, and BGM added an insurance run in the fifth.

Wheater was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Ryan again had two hits.

Taylor Halverson took to the circle for East Marshall’s final game against Twin Cedars, and the freshman got the first win of her varsity career. Halverson allowed two earned runs on five hitse and one walk while striking out three over the five-inning contest, and she backed her own effort by driving in four runs offensively.

Halverson finished 2-for-3 with a two-run double to cap the Mustangs’ four-run first, and she hit a two-run single during their seven-run third.

Eighth-grader Miyah Grabenbauer hit a two-run homer for her first varsity round-tripper, and Wheater hit a three-run shot for her first of the season.

East Marshall tries to avenge its only NICL West Division loss to this point with Monday’s home doubleheader against Grundy Center.
