SPORTS SHORTS: Unbeaten Comets win own round-robin tourney

CONRAD — The Class 1A No. 8 BCLUW volleyball team won its own six-team Comet Round Robin Tournament on Saturday by going 5-0.

South Tama took second in the event with a 3-2 mark for the day, taking a tie-breaker for the runner-up spot. The Trojans were the only team to take a game from BCLUW.

The Comets (9-0) remained unbeaten by sweeping Belle Plaine (21-16, 21-6), Iowa Falls-Alden (21-12, 21-14), Benton Community (21-9, 21-13) and Montezuma (21-11, 21-16) after starting with a three-set win over South Tama (17-21, 24-22, 16-14).

BCLUW was led by Grace Farnsworth with 39 kills. She added 19 digs, three blocks and 26-for-27 serving with two aces. Olivia Peters finished with 22 kills, a team-high 38 digs, and was 40-of-42 serving with an ace.

Kylie Pekarek chipped in with 17 kills and a team-best six blocks, while Kennedy Davis had 16 kills, four blocks, and served 27-for-29 with four aces. Raine Sireno contributed eight kills.

Sophomore setter Cambria Wayman racked up 62 assists while contributing 19 digs and 54-of-59 serving with seven aces. Sally Ramirez added 22 assists, seven digs, and served 21-of-23 with an ace.

MCC men’s soccer team tallies first two wins

The Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team scored its first two wins of the season, turning a Missouri road trip into a 2-0 showing over the weekend.

The Tigers (2-2-1) started with a 2-0 victory over State Fair CC on Friday in Sedalia, Mo., as first-half goals from Pedro Macedo and Enrico Cordeiro Borges buoyed the team to victory. Dominic Capla asssited on Borges’s goal, while Macedo converted a penalty kick.

MCC goalkeeper Tim Albrecht needed to make just three saves for the clean sheet.

On Saturday in Kansas City, the Tigers trampled Metropolitan CC 5-1 behind four first-half goals.

Kaisei Noguchi scored twice in the first half for Marshalltown to boost the team to a 4-0 lead at the intermission. Ricardo Paiva and Enrico Cordeiro Borg also scored in the first half, while Matoi Yanagisawa converted a penalty kick in the 57th minute to make it 5-0 Tigers. Assists in the game went to Yanagisawa, Macedo, Logan Olridge and Augustus Gruber.

Albrecht made five saves in net for the win.

The Tigers are back at home on Saturday with a match against Dakota County Technical College at 3:30 p.m. on the MCC campus.

Still room to register for Hoop Memorial Golf event

Spots remain for any golfers who would like to participate in the second annual American Legion Al Hoop Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The entry fee is $30 per person, which includes nine holes of golf, a cart, lunch and a commemorative T-shirt if paid by Wednesday, Sept. 10.
