MVC HOOPS: Drake outscores Racers, 101-90

DES MOINES — Jalen Quinn’s 34 points led Drake over Murray State 101-90 on Wednesday.

Quinn had six rebounds and three steals for the Bulldogs (10-10, 4-5 Missouri Valley Conference). Owen Larson scored 22 points (7 of 13 shooting) and added six rebounds. Andrew Alia shot 3 of 5 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points.

The Racers (16-4, 8-1) were led in scoring by Javon Jackson, who finished with 20 points and two steals. Roman Domon added 19 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, and Brock Vice had 12 points. The loss ended a 12-game winning streak for the Racers.

Isaiah Carr’s free throw with 17:38 remaining in the second half gave Drake the lead for good at 47-46.

ILLINOIS ST. 59, UNI 54

NORMAL, Ill. — Boden Skunberg’s 20 points helped Illinois State defeat Northern Iowa 59-54 on Wednesday night.

Skunberg also had eight rebounds for the Redbirds (14-6, 6-3 Missouri Valley Conference). Ty’Reek Coleman scored eight points while going 2 of 3 and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. Chase Walker had seven points and shot 1 of 5 from the field and 5 for 5 from the foul line.

Ben Schwieger led the Panthers (12-8, 4-5) in scoring, finishing with 15 points. Northern Iowa also got 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks from Will Hornseth. Leon Bond III also had 10 points and six rebounds.

Illinois State went into the half ahead of Northern Iowa 24-16. Skunberg put up eight points in the half. Skunberg scored Illinois State’s last six points as the Redbirds finished off a five-point victory.

UNI’s Goebel is Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS — Northern Iowa forward Ryley Goebel was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week — the second MVC weekly honor of her career.

Goebel had one of the most dominant games in Panther history on Sunday in UNI’s lone matchup of the week. The senior forward finished with a career-high 32 points on 14-for-18 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 from beyond the 3-point arc. She added 12 boards, five blocks and three steals. It marked her seventh double-double of the season and the eighth of her career.

Goebel’s five blocks give her 200 in her career, making her just the seventh player in MVC history to hit that plateau.

Drake’s Becker scores freshman honor

ST. LOUIS — Drake’s Anna Becker collected her second Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week award of the season, the league announced.

Becker had a productive week as Drake split a pair of games in MVC play, averaging 21 points and 7 rebounds while shooting 64.3 percent from the field. She began the week by matching her career high with 22 points on 11-of-18 shooting in a loss to Bradley, adding eight rebounds to her tally.

Becker then led Drake to a 66-56 win at Valparaiso, recording 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting with six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
