SPORTS SHORTS: Custard’s career-high not enough in MCC defeat

The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team had DMACC on the ropes but couldn’t deliver the knockout punch, falling 61-55 in Wednesday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash.

DMACC (14-6, 6-6) got out to a 53-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter before the Tigers made their comeback. The Lady Bears got enough free throws to go down to help snap a seven-game losing skid.

Breeley Clayburg led DMACC with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Aunasia Dunn had 10 points.

Ariyanah Custard scored a career-high 23 points, making five 3-pointers, to lead MCC (5-16, 2-11), but the Tigers suffered their fourth-straight loss. Shenell Stewart scored 14 points, while Kenijae Cherry had a double-double of 11 points and a career-high 21 rebounds to go with four blocked shots.

The Tigers are on the road again Saturday at Iowa Lakes.

Comets collect season sweep over Meskwaki

CONRAD — The BCLUW boys’ basketball team remained unbeaten in eight meetings with Meskwaki since joining the Iowa Star Conference, winning 74-28 on Tuesday night.

The Comets (7-7, 6-3) held the visiting Warriors (1-12, 1-8) to single-digit scoring in all four quarters of the South Division clash.

Five players scored in double figures for BCLUW, led by Daniel Zoske’s 15 points and 10 rebounds. Aiden Frank had 13 points, while Wyatt Gould, Avery Schipper and Ethan Shadlow got 10 points each. Shadlow had nine boards and six assists, while Eathan Petermeier contributed four points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Wolverines start fast to clip Colo-NESCO

COLO — The GMG girls’ basketball team held Colo-NESCO to just two points in the first half of their eventual 42-33 win in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

The Wolverines (6-7, 5-2) led 16-2 at the half but got outscored 31-26 the rest of the way by the host Royals (5-8, 2-6).

Skyler Murty led GMG with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Makayla Pendleton put up 10 points and five boards. Grace Mathern and Arianna Pierce pitched in with five points apiece off the bench.

Comet girls fall to league-leading Warriors

CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team suffered the season sweep by Meskwaki as the Warriors won 60-23 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.

Meskwaki (11-2, 7-1) led 32-11 at halftime and eased to the league victory.

Dorothy Bear had game-highs of 17 points and 11 steals to lead Meskwaki to its 11th-straight win. Isabella Kapayou added 16 points off the bench, and Bree Scabbyrobe scored 10 points.

Chloe Switzer scored 15 points to lead BCLUW (1-10, 1-17) in its 10th consecutive loss. Addison Moeller had four points and a team-leading eight rebounds, while Adelynn Zoske had four points and seven boards for the Comets.

South Hardin holds down Comets in non-conference play

ELDORA — The BCLUW boys’ basketball team was held to its season-low for the second time in as many games against North Iowa Cedar League competition, falling 63-33 at South Hardin on Monday night.

The host Tigers (7-5) jumped out to a 23-8 lead after the opening quarter and claimed the non-conference win for its 14th-straight in the series with the Comets.

Jake Balvanz scored a game-high 17 points for South Hardin. He was the only player to reach double digits in the match.

Aiden Frank scored nine points to pace BCLUW (6-7), and Eathan Petermeier had eight points. Daniel Zoske had a team-leading nine rebounds, while Nolan Martin contributed four points and four blocked shots off the bench.
