East Marshall’s Hull happy with up-and-down day
DES MOINES — Haley Fye’s name is scattered all over the East Marshall track and field record books.
Sydney Hull continues to hunt for her first place on the placard.
Hull returned to the Iowa Co-Ed State Track and Field Championships in two events for the second year in a row and found mixed results on Saturday inside Drake Stadium.
The East Marshall junior nearly notched her place in the school record with her 17th-place finish in the Class 1A 800-meter run, but then couldn’t find the same gear later in the day and got 21st in the 1,500.
Hull hammered the pedal to the floor for her last of two laps in Saturday morning’s 800, taking 17th place in a personal-best time of 2:21.93, just missing Fye’s 2015 record-setting mark of 2:21.41.
Hull was 19th in 2A a year earlier with a time of 2:23.04, and that stood as her best time before Saturday’s timed finals. She was even seeded 12th with her qualifying time of 2:24.88, but 22 of the 24 runners in the 1A 800 ran season- or personal-best times on a warm and windy Saturday morning on the Blue Oval.
“I’m excited about by 800,” she said after her two-race day. “The 1,500? I just got out way too hard.”
The 1,500-meter race got away from Hull, as she noted, in what was eventually a record-setting pace. Council Bluffs St. Albert senior Lili Denton broke her own state meet record, winning in 4:28.32.
A University of Texas recruit, Denton won the 800, too, in 2:12.20.
Hull wasn’t out to break any records on Saturday, but she would have celebrated had she gotten the 800-meter mark on Saturday.
“Happy accident, I’d say,” she said. “I mean, I’ve always wanted to break that one, especially since I’d gotten so close to it last year. That’s always been a goal for me.
“I had my best splits of the year and my best time.”
In the 1,500, Hull wasn’t able to maintain a steady pace in the heat and raucous atmosphere and settled for 21st in 5:08.06 after placing 18th in 2A a year ago with a time of 5:03.20.
Her season-best time was her state-qualifying meet time of 5:06.72.
“I’ve got some work to do if I want that record,” Hull said.
Now a two-time qualifier in both events, Hull is determined to have more in store for her senior campaign.
“I’m just working towards goals,” she said. “I know how to run each race now, I’m more confident, I’ve been here for two years already. And since it will be my senior year next year, I’ll have an even better work ethic.”
