SPORTS SHORTS: Thompson leads Trojan girls at Ballard meet
HUXLEY — The West Marshall girls’ track and field squad scored fourth place out of eight teams at Ballard’s Bomber Co-Ed Relays on Tuesday night.
The Trojans scored 75 points to place behind champion Ballard (136), Waverly-Shell Rock (116) and Roland-Story (99).
West Marshall got a quartet of runner-up finishes, with Addie Thompson tallying two of them. The senior scored silver in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 5 minutes, 22.39 seconds, and she was second in the 3,000 in 5:22.39.
Dalaney Eldridge was second in the long jump, clearing 16 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and she anchored the sprint medley relay team to second as well. Sophie Simms, Olivia Randall, Layla Shaver and Eldridge took silver in 1:58.46.
Alayna Frederick finished third in the 200 (28.37). Also scoring bronze was the Trojans’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Avery Buck, Evalyn Clark, Sophia Beebe and Cailyn Brown in a season-best time of 1:14.67, and the 4×800 group of Summer Kurth, Ella Randall, Thompson and Eldridge in 10:46.86.
Geers paces West Marshall at Dike-New Hartford
DIKE — The West Marshall boys’ track and field team finished ninth out of 14 teams at Dike-New Hartford’s Wolverine Invitational on Tuesday evening.
The Trojans scored 27 points in the meet, which was won by Mason City with 118 points. Denver was just one point back with 117 for second, while Aplington-Parkersburg (82) and Dike-New Hartford (79) gave chase.
West Marshall’s top result came from its 4×200-meter relay team, as Kinnick Geers, Erick Rosas Canchola, Evan Siegert and Turner DeRossett took fourth place in a time of 1 minute, 34.04 seconds.
Geers got fifth in the 100 (11.42), and he was a part of a pair of sixth-place relays. The Trojans’ sprint medley team of Geers, Calvin Streeter, Canchola and Siegert was sixth in 1:38.40, while the quartet of Siegert, Geers, Wyatt Brown and Canchola came in sixth in the 4×400 in 3:39.49.
Todd Peters picked up sixth place in the discus as well, heaving 137 feet.
Weaver medals, Mustangs win West Marshall tourney
STATE CENTER — Cody Weaver scored medalist honors to lead the East Marshall boys’ golf team to the title at the West Marshall Tournament on Monday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.
The Mustangs had a 16-stroke advantage on the 12-team field, holding off PCM 326-342 for the crown. BCLUW was third (349) and the host Trojans were fifth (358).
Weaver’s 4-over-par round of 76 edged West Marshall’s reigning state meet champion Hunter Polley by one stroke for medalist honors. BCLUW’s Zaden Eggers was third (80), and East Marshall’s Rylan Weaver (81) took fourth.
Jackson Bidwell (84) and Wyatt Stalzer (85) closed out East Marshall’s team scoring.
BCLUW’s other scoring rounds were provided by Beau Towne (87), Eathan Petermeier (91) and Adam Frank (91), while West Marshall’s support came from James Decker (84), Carter Pfantz (97) and both Connor Kemmerer and Kinnick Geers (100).
Farnsworth powers Comets at Hudson Relays
HUDSON — The BCLUW girls’ track and field team took 11th place out of 16 scoring teams at the Hudson Relays on Monday night, totaling 32 points.
The Comets finished just back of South Hardin (34.5) in 10th place but just ahead of AGWSR (31), which was 12th. Grundy Center (94) won the team title, Dike-New Hartford (88) was second and host Hudson (71) was third.
Senior Grace Farnsworth did a bulk of the scoring for the Comets, coming in first in the shot put and second in the discus. She won the shot put with a heave of 35 feet, 11 1/4 inches, and trailed only Janesville’s Quinn Sweeney (98-9) in the discus with her toss of 97-3.
BCLUW’s 4×800-meter relay foursome of Layla Follett, Kennedy Davis, Elise Engle and Chloe Switzer scored sixth place in 11 minutes, 53 seconds, and the shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Cambria Wayman, Adelynn Zoske, Callie Legg and Follett finished sixth in 1:27.58.
Isabella Stotts scored seventh place in the 3,000 with a time of 13:55.85, while the 4×100 foursome of Wayman, Lucy Walters, Follett and Brinna Benson took seventh in a season-best time of 55.44.
