VFW 839 Auxiliary conducts busy meeting
The VFW 839 Auxiliary meeting was held on June 18 at the Post Home. President Theresa Shepherd called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. followed by the opening ceremonies according to Ritual. There were six members and there was one visitor, Susan Conder, in attendance. Chaplain Donna Mitchem recited the opening prayer. Patriotic Instructor Kay Bell reminds us of our duty to the flag. The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance lead by Shepherd. Pam Gorham presented the minutes of May and General Orders at the previous meeting, since Secretary Linda Fuller was unable to attend. Approved. Treasurer Deb Miller gave the finance report. There was three bills Bell, ALA Unit 46, Dept. of IA VFWA; all three paid. The report was approved subject to audit. Shepherd asked Gorham to introduce the guest. A discussion of the membership fees to join, they need to see a family member’s DD214 form to qualify.
Committee Report: Hospital: Deloris Clayton report June 2026-27 bingo dates at the Iowa Veterans Home. Diane Welch reported 372 coupons were cut out and sent on.
OLD Business: Miller reported that the Elks Club has taken over responsibility of the Community Based Outpatient Clinic.
New Business: Auditors, Treasurer, Secretary will have an Audit meeting at 11 a.m. on July 14. Miller presented VFW Polos available to order. Welch like to have help with the Historian Books. Miller and Gorham are going to research fundraisers. At the Convention in Des Moines, VFW Auxiliary Post 839 Marshalltown was presented Awards for Outstanding Performance in the Dept. Programs Paper display of deposable flag, reaching over 100% membership, most poppies per membership, Clayton received the most volunteer hours plus the runner up for volunteerism. Mitchem read a prayer while Gorham draped the charter in dedication to the loss of Sandra Packer. Installation of new members by Clayton for the duty of 2027. President Shepherd, Treasury Miller, Trustee Welch, Trustee Mitchem, Bell Patriotic Instr. reinstalled. Shepherd brought up an auxiliary member in need of financial help. One time to help. Clayton made a motion; Gorham seconded the motion. Motion carried. Mitchem closed the meeting with the closing prayer and President Shepherd closed the meeting with the Ritual. Next meeting will be held on July 16 at 1:30 p.m. the VFW Home Post 839. Would love to have anyone come and join us to see what all we do for the Veterans and the community.
