Bobcat golfers place 5th at Linn-Mar Invite

MARION — The Marshalltown golf team played in its first tournament of the season on Monday, competing in the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.

The Bobcats placed fifth out of the 14 teams in attendance, finishing with a team-score of 323. Cedar Falls won the meet with a 300, while Cedar Rapids Washington finished second with a 307, Waukee third with a 308 and Cedar Rapids Xavier fourth with a 314.

Cole Davis was the highest placer for MHS, finishing in a tie for sixth with a score of 2-over-par 74, his best 18-hole round of the young season. Mason Reid was next with an 82, followed by Colin Schmit with an 83, Grant Greazel and Lucas Schneider with an 84 each and Brent Johnson with a 106.

Bobcat head coach Lucas Johnson said this was some valuable experience for the postseason for his squad.

“Given that we play our district meet at Hunters Ridge, it was a great opportunity to see the course as well as play against some of the competition from the eastern side of the state that we don’t normally see,” Johnson said.

Four of the six Marshalltown golfers shot a worse score on the back nine than the front on Monday, and Johnson said that will be something they need to correct before the district meet in two months.

“The back nine has some tricky holes where if you don’t pick your line right off the tee you can bring in a lot of trouble,” he said. “When you look at the difference between our front and back nine scores, it’s easy to see where the teeth of the course are and where we’ll need to focus on course management between now and when we see the course in October.”

The Bobcats are back on the links on Wednesday when they travel south to play Valley in a CIML Iowa Conference dual at Willow Creek Golf Course in West Des Moines.
