Murder suspect’s bond set at $1 million

Criminal complaint sheds more light on circumstances leading up to double homicide

After authorities arrested Ilias Julian Lasley in Des Moines on a warrant for two counts of first degree murder Saturday, his cash only bond was set at $1 million with an initial court appearance scheduled for May 1 at 9:30 a.m.

Lasley, 29, of Ankeny, is accused of killing 28-year-old Mario Murillo and 33-year-old Frances Tillie Gasca at a residence north of Marshalltown early Friday morning. A criminal complaint filed in connection with the charges sheds more light on the circumstances leading up to the alleged double homicide and includes the account of an eyewitness who said he saw the shooting unfold.

According to the complaint, a caller to the Marshall County Communications Center’s non-emergency line requested a welfare check on his brother, who he had not heard from since the day prior at 4 p.m., at around 1:45 a.m. on Friday morning.

The reporting party said his brother was at 2645 182nd St., and at 2 a.m., the caller dialed 911 and said he was at the 182nd Street address, where he saw blood on the ground. When deputies arrived, they found Murillo and Gasca deceased and saw signs that they were killed by someone not at the scene — including multiple shell casings, suggesting a handgun was likely used.

A witness who interviewed with law enforcement said he was at the 182nd Street address on the morning of April 19 with Gasca. The witness reported that sometime after 9:30 p.m., three people showed up at the house, including Lasley, who the witness said he had known since high school.

The witness said Lasley became upset because the witness, Murillo and Gasca were speaking in Spanish, and Murillo and Gasca then walked out of the house next to Murillo’s truck.

The complaint alleges that Lasley followed the victims to the truck. The witness said Lasley pulled a gun as he was standing at the front of Murillo’s truck and began shooting.

The witness said he saw Gasca fall to the ground, and he then left the scene.
