Marshalltown native Ali Dolphin was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year for Women’s basketball as she helped lead the St. Ambrose University Queen Bees to a 29-6 record.

The BCLUW girls and boys track teams ran at then Wartburg Co-Ed Indoor meet with Susie Kuhl topping the field in the 3000-meter run and Kuhl anchoring the winning 1600-meter relay team of Kris Penick, Jamie Fisher, Kelsey Feltz and Kuhl.

Marshalltown High School Band Department prepared for Jazz Coffee Concert which starred the Hoover Jazz Festival outstanding award winners: Adam Zeihan, Craig Luttrell, Tony Braack, Mandy Pearson, Matt Gieselman, Jill Anderson, Steven Smyth, David Johnson and Lee Walker.

The Annual Pops Concert at Anson Junior High entitled “Saturday Night Fever” starred the talents of ninth grade dancers: Sue Whitaker, Cindy Liter, Sharon Moravec, Connie Purvis, Kim Vry, Cali McLaughlin, Annette Winter, Sally Brooks, Shelly Karns and Mary Hartwig.

Marshalltown Chess Club players had a one, two, three, four placement at the Dysart Spring Chess Tournament as Jaleb Jay finished first; Andrew Heckroth, second; Chris Johnson, third and Alex Miner, fourth.

Fisher Elementary students presented “Little Snow White” which starred Caroline Ehm, beast; Sara Stubbs, Snow White; Jimmy Ottilie, huntsman; and Melissa Slifer and Burgess Barr as dwarfs.

Kevin and Kent Rhodes, 15-year-old twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Rhodes, both students at Miller Junior High School, placed first and second in the senior biological division of the 19th Annual Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair in Cedar Rapids.

East Marshall’s Vanessa Clemens and West Marshall’s Kelsi Johnston were selected to play in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and Gatorade Senior Basketball game at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. Clemens was selected for the Class 2A white team and Johnston for the Class 2A grey team.

Jacob Burt was headed to the State Invent Iowa Contest at the University of Iowa for his “Nifty-Difty Elevation Pillow” made to hold ice packs in place to aid in the comfort of an injured arm or leg.

Matt Mann, a 1991 MHS graduate and a Marshalltown Community College student, was awarded the Presidential Community College scholarship of $4,500 by Drake University, renewable for a second year.

Chad Lammert, Jill Spencer and Nathan Coffin helped usher in Spring at the Head Start Development Center as they hugged rabbits and puppies and tried their hands at bottle feeding baby goats.

Bobcat senior Nate Sletten led the track team in the 1600-meter run winning it in a time of 4 minutes, 43.06 seconds at the Central College Indoor meet.

MHS Varsity Mock Trial Team of: Crag Bogner, David Hibbs, Blair Heiserman, Darrin Eige, Dan Boscaljon and Angie Ryan took first place at the regional competition to advance to the state tournament at Drake University.

• 40 years ago in 1978

The Pleasant Hill Pirates led by Gary Brooks 14 points; Dale Bigbee’s eight points; Bill Hebert and Doug Severe’s four points each and Mike Abbas and Jim Bradley’s two points each defeated Glenwood 34-31 for the Division II Special Olympics Basketball Championship.

MCC sophomore Marquis Navarre was named to the All-Region XI men’s basketball second team as a result of leading the Tigers in scoring with a 16.3 point per game average.

Wendy Schoell, a 1991 graduate of MHS, was named the Outstanding Female Performer for her performance in “Follies,” a University of Iowa Greek Week event after singing a version of Aretha Franklin’s “Think” and also inducted into the Order of Omega, a scholarship, leadership service fraternity.
