The ebb and flow of hitting in high school baseball found the Marshalltown riding a tidal wave with 26 hits in the doubleheader with Zach Thompson homering in both games and John Logan supplying a homerun in the opener as MHS defeated Indianola 12-1 and 14-7.

MHS Bobcats qualified four boys in eight individual events plus a relay for the State Track Meet: Jay Rozell, Todd Joslin, Charlie Kelly and Troy Eygabroad.

Green Mountain’s Rhonda Groth came within an eyelash of winning the 400 meter dash at the girls state track meet as she finished with a time of 58.03 to the winner’s 58.01 time.

Students at Franklin Elementary helped carry bags of pennies to the bank after the completion of a penny drive that netted more than $3,000 for the American Cancer Society.

During Thimble Theater’s dress rehearsal for “Peter Pan,” Captain Hook played by Alyson Earney brandished his sword at Peter, played by Janet Brynes, and Wendy, played by Jennifer Westberg. Of course, Peter outwitted Captain Hook as usual.

The Albion 4-H Club consisting of: Brittany Upah, RaeAnn Pierce, Miekeila Tordoff, William Ohrt, Ashley Miller, Lacey Miller, Zack Mann, Kristina Coltrain, Megan Pixler, James VonAhnen, Freeman Ohrt, Eddie Pierce, Lucas Ohrt and future 4-Her, Leslie Ohrt honored deceased veterans with flags for more than 130 grave sites at the Albion Cemetery.

GMG senior Angie Sandquist fired the shot put 40 feet, 8.25 inches at the girls’ state track meet and won the event for the second straight year.

LDF girls softball opened its season by crushing BCL 18-8 as Julie Clover, LDF designated hitter led the seven-hit attack with three hits in five at bats scoring five runs and batting in three more.

Senior night for the MHS girls soccer team was a rousing success as the Bobcats defeated Des Moines North 9-0 with Liz Schrum and Hannah Overstake each adding two goals apiece.

The MHS 4×400 relay team of: Tara Sondall, Melissa Bayer, Michelle Duder and Tracy Galbreath captured the 3A state championship title in the event with a time of 4:01.18.

Kevin Rhodes, ninth grader at B.R. Miller Junior High, received a third place award at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Anaheim, Calif.

New faces will show up at the Girls State Golf Meet in Class 2A as West Marshall girls won the Heart of Iowa Conference Small Division, district and regional meets and qualified for state with the team of: Kaitlyn Randall, Taylor Davis, Susan Johnson, Shawna Pfantz, Juree Muench and Abbey Barry.

Karen Haslett, of Marshalltown, was one of 46 Augustana College students elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honorary society.

A Court of Honor was held for three Cadette Scouts who had earned their First Class Ratings: Kim Summers, Paula Graham and Susan Patton became Marshalltown’s only First Class Cadette Scouts.
