The Marshalltown Bobcats clinched the outright league championship with the 7-2 and 9-6 sweep of Ames as Don Hutcheson and Tracy Wildman led the offense in the first game with three hits each and Rik Carter led the offense with three hits in the second game.

The Comeback ‘Cats defeated Fort Dodge 6-3 in the Class 4A Region 4 semifinals as Lauren Lockhart and Hannah West each drove in two runs and Kallie Schive’s rise ball was spot on.

The West Marshall baseball team swept Colo-Nesco 8-5 in the opener and 12-0 in the nightcap as Nate Pierson, Matt Lively and Kent Hickman spurred on the offense at the plate.

Julie Eich, Green Mountain pitcher, set a new school record winning her 109th victory in the 6-0 win over Garwin as she threw a two-hitter, striking out 17 batters.

The 2008 Central Iowa Fair Queen was Rachel Pfantz, of State Center, a junior at Iowa State University in animal science and equine management.

• 25 years ago in 1993

The 13th ranked East Marshall girls took a 3-2 victory over BGM and a 7-0 win over Colo-Nesco in the East Marshall Classic as Shawna Burns limited BGM to seven hits and struck out six batters, then she combined with Ginny Landt in the Colo-Nesco game to only allow two hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Garwin boys used their big bats to pound out an 8-3 win over BCL as Mike Boege and Jeff Peshel each had two base hits with Boege driving in four runs.

The Bobcats rocked Waterloo East 11-0 in the Class 4A Substate 2 opener as left-hander Jimmy Six was in control on the mound and helped out at the plate by Nick Thimesch, Tyler Peschong and Cole Danielson’s two hits each including Danielson’s two-run homer to end the game.

Kim Groth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Groth, Rt. 4, practiced her showmanship and grooming skills for the Grooming Showmanship Competition at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds.

Gilman 10-year-old Curt Roseland, son of Tim and Deleana Roseland, was named Reserve State Youth Champion at the Iowa National Barrel Horse Association Show in Mason City.

West Marshall received what may have been Brian Smith’s best all-around pitching effort of his young career in the Class 2A Championship opening round 2-1 victory over Roland-Story as he allowed two singles hits, fanned nine and walked one.

LDF baseball team smashed Collins 15-0 with Brian Salasek, Grant Benson and Kent Dougherty each serving up two hits to lead the offense as Dougherty drove in two runs to put them in the sectional finals against West Marshall.

BCLUW sophomore pitcher Jamie Fisher earned her second consecutive Most Valuable Player honor on the all-North Iowa Cedar League West Division softball team.

The BCLUW girls lit up the scoreboard in the 7-2 win over Bondurant-Farrar as Jane Smith ripped a triple and a single and scored twice and Cherilyn Kruse hit two singles and scored two runs.

Bev Seeger’s two-run double in the top of the fourth inning sparked the West Marshall girls to a 3-1 win over Roland-Story to clinch the Heart of Iowa Conference crown.
