Three players scored 11 points each: Austin Hauser, Kyle Carnahan and Clarke Mossman and the balance paid off as the Marshalltown High School freshmen ‘A’ team defeated Dowling Catholic 38-34.

The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball squad upped their overall record to 16-4 after defeating Clinton 107-92 as three players scored more than 20 points each with Derrick Randolph leading the scores with a game high 26, Jason Berkey followed with 23 points and Anthony Harris added 22 points.

Defense was the name of the game as the MHS boys defeated West Waterloo 57-41 with Keith Schuchmann leading all scorers with 17 points as Joe Miller dropped in 14 and Dan Clayton finished with 12.

The MHS varsity boys won its fifth consecutive game in the 58-43 victory over Dowling Catholic with Chanse Creekmur leading the scoring with 15 points and nine rebounds along with Shaun Mohon’s 12 points and Ben Brennecke adding 11 points.

Bobcat wrestlers eked out a win in the 31-29 dual victory over Urbandale as Scott Cummings, Daniel Manchon, Damon Henry, Chris Lukan and Todd Cizek all came through with pins against their opponents.

C. Eric Bryant was invited by Gov. Joan Finney to participate in the 1994 Kansas Student Leadership Forum. Bryant was appointed to the Executive Counsel of Student Government and the Director of the Men’s Residence Association at MidAmerica Nazarene College.

The West Marshall grapplers rolled up 127 points to capture the Perry Invitational as Jim Clark won the 112 pound class; Kevin Jacob took the 119 pound class and Jon Brockman won the 145 pound class.

EM/GMG wrestlers pinned West Marshall 44-33 as Jase Schossow, Gabe Uhde, Sam Upah, Jesse Buchanan and Tanner Williams sealed the deal with pins.

The GMG Wolverines toppled No. 3 ranked East Marshall as Nathan Farnsworth hit for 28 points assisted by teammates Jerrid Ware’s 18 and Tim Mull’s 11 points.

The Green Mountain boys led by Doug Urhammer’s 31 points and eight rebounds downed Mingo 78-62 for their 10th victory as Steve Groth finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Mark Petermeier hit for 12 points and eight rebounds.

When a group of MHS three-point shooters got hot the game quickly turned in Marshalltown’s favor for the 71-49 win over Mason City as Michael Appel had a game high 21 points and nine rebounds and Chanse Creekmur finished with 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

South Tama’s Nathan Roberts hit four three-pointers as he scored 34 points to lead the Trojans to an 82-74 victory over Cedar Rapids La Salle while Brandon Rutledge assisted the effort with 19 points and Mike Dvorak added 12.

The West Marshall Trojans whipped Roland-Story 66-33 and then the next night beat Southeast Polk 62-54 as Jim Knuth hit for 30 points and 14 rebounds in the Southeast Polk game and 20 points and 11 rebounds to key the Roland-Story win.

Miller Middle School students Chris Schmidt, Ryan Butcher and Alfonso Martinez presented a check for $700, raised by fellow students, to Pastor Steve Stepec to give to Jonathan’s House Orphanage in Sierra Leone.

Ellen Engleking helped the BCLUW girls score a big win on the road as she pumped in 26 points to lead all scorers in the 56-41 win over Class 1A 15th ranked Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock.

Jeff Buffington, 10-year-old 70 pound from Marshalltown, and Jeff Pepe, 13-year-old 80 pounder from Conrad, were silver medalists in the National Silver Gloves Boxing tournament in Pontiac, Mich.
