Evan Dempewolf and Grant Greazel, both 5-year-olds, were the envy of their friends after their mothers each bid $350 at the Night of Stars fundraiser to get them a ride to school in a Marshalltown Fire Department truck.

The South Tama/East Marshall girls’ soccer team faced two foes and won two games in two days as they beat Oskaloosa 1-0 in a shootout win and Vinton-Shellsburg 1-0 on a goal by Morgan McFate assisted by Gabby Cruz.

Marshalltown Community College freshmen Will Clyburn and DeMarcus Phillips were invited to participate in the Top 120 JUCO camp at Oral Roberts University which allows top JUCO basketball players a chance to showcase their talents in front of four-year coaches to be evaluated.

Julie Hanchak, a MHS senior, was chosen as one of 30 students to receive an Emerson Electric National Scholarship grant which covers four years of study.

Lorna Knoll was named to the Junior Leadership Honor Society in Minnesota based on academic performance and is limited to only 10 percent of the class.

BCLUW senior Nick Hutchens received a $150,000 Navy ROTC scholarship and planned to attend Iowa State University where between his junior and senior years he would attend Marine Officer Candidate School in Virginia.

The MHS sprint medley team of Corrie Plowman, Nicole Paxson, Jill Anderson and anchor Tara Sondall brought home the Class 3A girls state championship title.

• 40 years ago in 1979

The MHS boys tennis team ended its season on a high note with the 5-4 win over West Waterloo as Jim Nieman and Dan Clayton won singles matches while the doubles teams of Nieman-Clayton, Frank Zink and Russ Welp and Chad Krantmann and Bart Rhodes brought the victory home.

North Tama track star Sara Stoakes broke the school record and the Class 1A state meet record in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute, 2.14 seconds at the Iowa State Track & Field Co-ed State Championships for the title.

MHS boys tracksters qualified two individuals in three events for the state meet: Troy Eygabroad in the 100 meter dash and Charlie Kelly in the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter runs.

Eric Collins, of Green Mountain High School, was the recipient of the C.J. and Sophia Hach Scholarship to ISU of $1,250 for the first year, renewable for three more years for a total of $5,000.

MHS senior Michael Anderson was one of 30 recipients of a four-year Emerson National Scholarship which he planned to use at Coe College in the pre-med program and studying English.

MHS tennis standout Hayley Hickman earned a berth at the Girls’ State Tennis Tournament.

• 40 years ago in 1979

The Green Mountain girls ripped Collins 12-0 as Lori Cook pitched a no-hitter striking out six batters and allowing on one walk and then at the plate Cook hit a three-run triple while teammate Margaret Squire hit a three-run home run in the first inning.

GMG senior Angela Upah was named the recipient of a Grand Lodge of Iowa A.F. & A.M. scholarship of $2,000 which she planned to use at ISU.

In a cross age mentoring event between Glick Elementary and MHS, Genessa Nash from Glick refused the offer of chocolate syrup on her ice cream from MHS student Tonja Wanschel. Some people prefer their ice cream plain.

• 40 years ago in 1979

Shelly Clemons, Nancy Summers and Brenda Meyers, of Girl Scout Troop 331, received their First Class awards, the equivalent to the Eagle Scout award in the Boy Scouts of America.
