The Marshalltown High School football team cracked the Top 10 in the Associated Press high school football poll in the 10th spot after defeating No. 7 ranked West Des Moines Valley 16-14 as Chanse Creekmur went 18-of-33 passing for 218 yards and Nick Thimesch and Mark Duncan shared team high honors with five catches each.

Keturah Hagen, of Eldora-New Providence, was named a semifinalist in the 1995 Merit Scholarship Competition.

The Garwin Roughriders trounced Mingo 41-8 in the Ta-Ma-Ja Conference opener as Jay Freese led the Roughriders with one touchdown on a quarterback sneak and threw for four touchdowns.

The MHS boys’ golf squad nipped the Mason City Mohawks 163-164 as Ben Wollam lead the Bobcats with a 38 for runner-up medalist honors.

Marshalltown St. Mary’s students: Mary McCaan, Nicole Luken, Megan Allen, Christine Hunt, Jason Drager, Ryan Shore and Tyler Mauseth cooled down from the excessive heat with popsicles.

The Bobcat girls’ cross country squad captured first place in the Bobcat Cross Country Invitational with Karen Clark, Val Sharp, Marcia Mann, Patty Fisher and Renee Welp were the top five finishers for the ‘Cats.

MHS students Erin Pieper and Laura Feld, West Marshall student Lisa Hilleman and MHS teacher Mary Ann Tordsen appeared at the Fisher Community Center for the exhibit featuring artwork by students and teachers.

The Lenihan ninth grade football squad opened it season with a 53-6 thrashing of Miller Middle School as Mark Swanson threw five touchdown passes with Greg Spence as the receiver on three of the touchdowns.

The MHS cross country boys’ squad captured third place for the second time in a row at the Iowa City High Invitational as Jimma James stepped up to take fourth place overall in a time of 16 minutes, 15 seconds.

GMG Wolverines football team buried the Ventura Vikings 46-0 as Ryan Schulte ran for 201 yards and Darin Welton packed on 154 yards on the ground.

• 40 years ago in 1979

MHS football players Todd Raabe, Brad Zeitner and Ken Watt were Bobcat award winners with Raabe being named the outstanding defensive player of the week; Zeitner the outstanding offensive player of the week and Watt the sweatknocker award for the hit he made on the East tailback in front of the East bench.

The West Marshall football team held on to defeat North Polk 10-0 for a Homecoming victory as they West Marshall defense duo of Dalton Ferch and Tanner Stalzer picked off the North Polk quarterback three times.

The MHS swimmers easily out-distanced Ottumwa 414-323 as they had six first place finishes including four for Katie Bloom as the anchor for the 200-meter relay team of Susan Miriovsky, Molly Fruin and Heather Rouse; the 50-yard freestyle sprint, the 100 meter freestyle and as the anchor on the 400 meter freestyle relay with Angie Veld, Staci Nelson and Miriovsky.

Stu Atha, Dave Mattox, Rob Naughton and Mark McCright recorded a four-way tie for first place as the MHS boys’ cross country team sailed to a 17-38 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

The GMG volleyball squad swept Walnut Ridge 25-9, 25-16 and 25-22 as Wendee Cooper lead the Wolverines with five kills and Shayna Bollhoefer amassed 10 service aces.

The MHS Bobcat cheerleaders for 1979 were: Sue Andrews, Susan Maze, Jan Grimes, Regina Ream, Debbie Lukehart, Julie Mills, Lori Speer, Nancy Peterson, Rhonda Alman and Renae Weidner.

MHS junior Alex Hoop devised an inventive way to ask Kallie Schive to the Homecoming dance by writing the invitation, “Kallie, Homecoming? Alex” in chalk on her driveway. Schive said, “Yes.”

MHS volleyball squad swept Ames 17-15, 15-8 and 15-10 as Sarah Eads hit 26-of-32 spikes with 10 kills and Rebecca Albert finished with 10 blocks and 20 assists.

• 40 years ago in 1979

The LDF cheerleaders for 1979 were: Maribeth Lee, Sheri Paone, Cathy Mehlert, Marsha Ahrens, Penny Anderson, Kim Madison, Sharon Ferneau and Linda Powers.
