A steady, unrelenting effort helped the Marshalltown High School boys swim team to a 100-70 win over Grinnell as Brian Bacon won the 200 freestyle, the 100 backstroke and was on Marshalltown’s only winning relay — the 200 freestyle relay.

The Marshalltown Community College women won its fifth straight game as they defeated Ellsworth 72-52 with Shelley Delger leading the Tigers with 22 points followed by Stephanie Yauk’s 14 points.

The MHS two centers — Tim Walljasper and Dave Heddens — combined for a total of 18 points and 1 rebounds that when added to Steve DeVenney’s 14 points and Don Miller’s 10 resulted in the defeat of West Waterloo 62-51.

The West Marshall girls downed Gladbrook-Reinbeck 51-39 as Molly Underwood led the way for the Trojans with 20 points.

The unbeaten West Marshall wrestlers ran its dual meet record to 3-0 beating Ogden 52-23 as Joel Randall started off the match with a pin and Jacey Large, Walker Buck, Jacob Randall and Kevin Doser all pinned their opponents.

MHS wrestlers rolled up 149 points to capture the Warrior Invitation as they posted 20 of 28 match wins, 11 of them by pin and with Kevin Lynk and Clint Walters being named champions.

MHS senior cheerleaders Angie Bryant, Erim Schrader and Keely Casady were among seven Iowans chosen as a Universal Cheerleader to join others representing the U.S. in the London New Year’s Day Parade.

The Anson boys basketball squad took a pair of games from Miller as the ninth grade team won 65-50 and the eighth grade squad won 43-30 as Joel Bolar dropped in 21 points for the ninth grade team and Mike Oleson led the eighth graders with 14 points.

Astronomer Chris Burke, a 1995 graduate of MHS, while working on a research team at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for astrophysics discovered a “super-Earth” orbiting a red dwarf star 40 light years away.

The Bobcats edged passed Newton for a 58-52 win as Mike Burggraaf led the scoring with 13 points followed by Eric Lynch’s 12 points.

The BCL wrestlers moved its dual meet record to 4-0 with the 51-9 romp over LDF as Allen Hoff, Paul Zern and Jeff King all won their matches by pinning the opponent.
