Marshalltown Lioness install new officers

The Marshalltown Lioness held its June meeting at the VFW Hall on Monday. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of “God Bless America” led by Martha Fisher. Liz Wood led the group in grace before the meal served by the VFW.

Dessa Hattenfield, president, introduced Mel Dostal, past District Governor of Lions District 9MC, who served as the installing officer of the 2015-16 Lioness officers.

Dostal then conducted the installation with Charlotte McGinty as the new president; Judy Stone as secretary-treasure; 1st Vice President Bob Maile; 2nd Vice President Martha Fisher; 3rd Vice President Dianne Maile; Directors Lou Benskin, Edith Podhajsky and Mary Bryant; Tail Twister Bev Ruopp; Lion Tamer Margaret Kroener and Past President Hattenfield.

Hattenfield then thanked everyone who had helped her during the past year.

Stone announced that the Lioness, along with the Evening Lions, are again selling Colorado peaches. Don Anderson has again offered his building on East Main for peach pickup during the second week of August. The price per lug will remain be $27 and can be purchased by contacting any Lioness. Prepayment is required at the time they are ordered.

The Lioness will again be selling slices of homemade fruit pies at the Art Festival on July 18 at the Fisher Community Center parking lot.

Podhajsky, co-captain of the Relay for Life team, reported on the Tip Night with $206.51 earned for the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life packets with donations must be turned in by the June 22 board meeting. Podhajsky and Ruopp, Lioness face painters team co-captains, announced that anyone interested in coming or helping at the Lioness booth at the Marshalltown High School track on the afternoon or evening of June 27 is welcome.

Dianne Maile reported on the completion of the screenings for KidSight for the school year with 937 children screened and 88 referred for professional care. A training session will be set up at St. Mary Parish Hall in August for those who want to be trained or retrained to be KidSight screeners. Bob Maile reported that screeners or recorders interested in manning the KidSight booth at the Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fair can register on the Iowa Lions Kidsight website. Lori Short and Wendy Cadena will coordinate the State Fair screening. The Mailes were thanked for their leadership in KidSight and presented with a thank you gift by Betsy Jones.

Hattenfield thanked Kathy Sievers for volunteering to be the next Lioness newsletter editor.

Tailtwister Ruopp honored the Lioness with June birthdays, tested the members on identifying garden flowers, and sent us out with a smile.

The meeting closed with the Lioness prayer.
