13th Street Inn to close its doors today
The 13th Street Inn, a longstanding fixture in Marshalltown, is closing shop today.
The eatery, 229 N 13th St., known for its homemade fair such as tenderloins, hot beef sandwiches, patty melts, cheese balls and root beer floats, among other goodies, has left locals with memories of meals spent with friends and family.
“It’s had a bit of a cult following,” said John Hermanson, co-chair of the 13th Street District Committee. “It’s been an establishment in the district for many years, and a lot of people have sentimental and emotional ties.”
With the news of the closing, patrons took to social media to share their memories and post photos of them enjoying their “last meals” at the establishment.
“I am so sad we are losing an iconic 13th Street restaurant,” said Val Ruff, executive director of the Marshalltown Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The eatery has been sold, but the details of the transaction or what the new buyer will put in its place, were not confirmed at press time. The restaurant’s current owner, Teena Bagnall, had no comment for the Times-Republican.
“We hate to lose the 13th Street Inn, but the future remains bright for the district,” Hermanson said.
