Hallelujah! Handel’s ‘Messiah’ performed at First Methodist

The 69th performance of George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” was held on Sunday at First Methodist Church. A portion of Sunday’s concert freewill donations will be given to a local charity.

Presented by the Central Iowa Choral Society, the concert also featured organist Chad Mussig, Loren Stoneberg on the piccolo trumpet and Brett Umthun on the timpani. The concert was conducted by Janet Collison.

Handel wrote “Messiah” in 1741. Following a requested concert to raise money for an orphanage and debtor’s prison, Handel figured “Messiah” would be the right piece. Afterward, he requested future performances of “Messiah” be given to charity.
