Annual spring Guiding Star fundraiser on Saturday

T-R PHOTO BY LANA BRADSTREAM Guiding Star Marshalltown will host its spring fundraiser, Mother’s Market, on Saturday. This year the event places a focus on the mothers in our lives.

The annual spring fundraiser for Guiding Star Marshalltown is this Saturday, and the nonprofit is switching it up.

Marketing and Outreach Coordinator Emma Kielman said this year they are focusing on mothers with the Mother’s Market. Last year they held the Spring Into Summer event.

“We want to honor the mothers who come to the center, and in our lives,” she said. “We thought since Mother’s Day is around the corner, it would be fun. We want to focus on celebrating them and pampering them.”

The pampering can come in the form of free refreshments and “mom-osas,” pictures in the photo booth, hand and back massages from Bethany Angel.

Attendees can also get Botox and IV hydrations from Pure Aesthetics Med Spa. Brit Marie’s will be onsite to offer permanent jewelry, which is a custom piece fitted to the person and welded together. Since it is a permanent piece, there is no clasp to take it off. However, it can be removed with a pair of scissors. Attendees can also build their own flower bouquet from My Dinasour Dreams and enter to win a big giveaway.

Kielman said it is an opportunity for mothers to indulge in natural and sustainable products from local vendors.

Kielman said the Mother’s Market is the beginning of the Donating In Honor of a Mother campaign, which runs through the month of May.

“If there is a remarkable mother in your life – biological, grandmother, teacher – whoever has helped turn you into the person you are, we want to honor that mother on our wall,” she said.

Not only will the mother’s name be on the Guiding Star wall, but it will also be posted on the website and social media pages.

While there is a cost for people to attend the Mother’s Market, children are free. Kielman said Guiding Star will not have childwatch services during the event.

The money raised will go toward the $150,000 necessary to continue the nonprofit’s mission of creating a holistic, empowering healthcare alternative for women. Guiding Star serves women and families with natural fertility, family planning, pregnancy, birthing services, breastfeeding, family services and postpartum care. They do that through classes, support groups, conferences and workshops.

“Anyone is welcome to the Mother’s Market,” Kielman said.
