SPORTS SHORTS: Rebels rattle off sweep of South Hardin

ELDORA — The Class 1A No. 12 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team won an NICL West Division match against South Hardin on Thursday in three sets, 25-13, 25-20, 25-9.

Saari Kuehl led the Rebels (19-4, 3-1) with 11 kills, while Meriah Wittgreve followed with six and Justina Eggers had five.

Madison Denny-Weber recorded 25 assists, and Alyssa Morgan led the way with 25 digs defensively, followed by Kuehl with 20 and Rachel Cooley with 12. Wittgreve also finished with two solo blocks.

Cooley was 16-for-17 in service with four aces, and Morgan and Jada Schlampp each had three aces against the Tigers (2-10, 0-4).

Comets cruise past Cougars in 3 sets

CONRAD — The BCLUW volleyball team earned an NICL West Division win over AGWSR on Thursday in straight sets, 25-12, 25-18, 25-16.

Easton Swanson was the offensive leader for the Comets (11-5, 4-1) with 11 kills, followed by Madi Ubben with eight and Jade Hammers with seven against the Cougars (5-14, 0-4).

Cate Nason took top facilitator honors with 15 assists, though Lizzie Garber was hot on her heels with 14. Swanson also had 11 digs to lead defensively, with Parker Scurr following closely with 10 and Garber recording five. Scurr also was 21-for-21 serving with four aces, and Ubben had two solo blocks and three block assists.

GMG dropped by Collins-Maxwell

MAXWELL — The GMG volleyball team fell in straight sets to Collins-Maxwell in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash, losing 25-19, 25-15, 25-13.

The Wolverines (5-13, 2-2) were led by Kelsey Vaverka with five kills. Maesa Groth added two kills and Mable Dieleman had one for GMG. Madi Krull came away with eight assists.

Defensively, Tory Novotny tallied a team-leading 10 digs while Dieleman had eight more. Vaverka, Krull and Emily Vaughn added six digs apiece. Groth was the top server going 9-for-9 with two aces, Krull and Vaughn were 9-for-9, while Vaverka was 8-for-9 with one ace. Groth and Vaughn led at the net with two blocks each.

Josie Wierson paced Collins-Maxwell (9-3) with 15 kills and six blocks, and and Gracie Cheville had another 12 kills. Trinity Stover finished with four blocks.

Warriors force 4 sets in loss to Baxter

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The Meskwaki volleyball team lost an Iowa Star Conference South Division game to Baxter on Thursday, falling in four sets, 16-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-20.

Abigail Iron Shell and Tori Lasley each had four kills for the Warriors (4-15, 0-3), followed by Payton Tahahwah with three, Danielle Seymour with two and Marley Whitefish with one. Whitefish had a team-high eight assists, and Iron Shell had 12 digs.

Lasley was strong at the net against the Bolts (6-6, 2-1) with five solo blocks, and Iron Shell chipped in three block assists.

Seymour went 12-for-14 in service with seven aces, while Leticia Garcia and Tahahwah each had four aces.
