Mustangs sweep Spartans in NICL West softball
LE GRAND — The East Marshall softball team swept Monday’s NICL West Division doubleheader with Grundy Center, topping the Spartans 10-0 and 12-2. Both games ended in six innings.
The host Mustangs (10-6, 3-2) won for the ninth time in 10 games, powered again by prolific pitching. Morgan Neuroth tossed a four-hit shutout in the first game, and Peyton Grabenbauer surrendered just six hits in the nightcap.
In the first game, East Marshall put its nine hits together with five errors from Grundy Center (4-13, 1-5) to pull away for the comfortable victory. Neuroth struck out 14 Spartans and didn’t allow a baserunner to advance beyond second.
The Mustangs led 3-0 before scoring five times in the bottom of the fifth, keyed by two-run singles for Vaeda Bryan and Makayla Kerber. Bailey Grant finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Mylie Rasmusson also had two hits.
Lucy Lebo took the loss for Grundy Center, allowing eight runs on seven hits and four walks over 4 1/3 innings. She struck out five.
Lebo had the Spartans’ only extra-base hit — a two-out double in the top of the first inning. Maddy Hendershot, Aubree Mundt and Camdyn Aronson had singles.
Grundy Center was sent to its seventh straight loss in the nightcap as Grabenbauer allowed just six singles in pitching all six innings. She walked two and struck out one, getting a flawless performance from her defense in the win.
Grabenbauer helped her own cause with a pair of singles, including a two-run knock as East Marshall ended the game with six runs in the home half of the sixth. Ava Bringmann, Neuroth and Grant each hit a double to help the Mustangs finish off the sweep.
Hendershot was 2-for-3 to lead the Spartans. Carlie Willis, Kahlynn Draper, Lebo and Mundt each added singles. Hendershot pitched four innings for the loss, allowing six runs on five hits and six walks while striking out four.
