Trojans limit MHS offense in a sweep
WATERLOO — The Marshalltown baseball team was unable to capitalize on its scoring chances in the first game and couldn’t get them in the second, falling 5-1 and 11-0 in Monday’s Iowa Alliance Conference sweep at the hands of Waterloo East.
The Trojans used a pair of complete-game pitching performances to pick up two IAC North Division victories, limiting the Bobcats (4-16, 2-6) to just one run on the night.
Justin Thomas allowed eight hits — all singles — in the first game and stranded eight Bobcats on base to preserve an early lead. He walked one and struck out eight, leaving six MHS baserunners waiting in scoring position.
Waterloo East (12-8, 4-4) scored four times in the bottom of the first inning and tacked on another run in the second. Jonah Helmrichs hit a bases-clearing double in the first and scored on Tye Schellhorn’s ensuing double.
Caleb Kusserow, Keiler Blue and Nick Wise had two hits apiece to lead the Bobcat bats. Sam Greazel led off the fourth with a single and scored after hits by Blue and Wise.
Nick Rebik took the loss for the MHS pitching staff, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Tayven Dutton and Jacob Hayes combined to pitch 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
“In Game 1 we had opportunities to cut into their lead and we didn’t ever get our timely hit,” said MHS interim head coach Allen Mann. “Rebik, Dutton and Hayes did a nice job throwing strikes. Our defense played well because of their effort on the mound.”
In the nightcap, Marshalltown managed just two hits against Caleb Peters in an 11-0, five-inning defeat. Peters gave up a first-inning walk to Rebik, a fourth-inning single to Greazel, and a hit by Wise in the fifth, and those were the only Bobcats to reach base.
Thomas had a two-run triple and Helmrichs drove in three runs for the Trojans. Phoenix Shipman hit a pair of two-run singles as Waterloo East scored six runs in the third and four in the fourth.
Seth Smith surrendered six runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk over 2 2/3 innings, striking out two in the loss.
“We couldn’t get the big inning stopped,” Mann said. “At times this season we have done OK getting those big innings stopped, but tonight we weren’t able to.”
The Bobcats continue their busy week on the road with Wednesday’s doubleheader at Ottumwa and Thursday’s double-dip at Mason City. Both twinbills begin at 5 p.m.
“A lot of things to practice and learn from,” Mann added. “We need to have a good practice on Tuesday to put ourselves in a spot to compete on Wednesday.”
