Xayvion Anderson

DES MOINES — Marshalltown junior Xayvion Anderson claimed the 157-pound championship and the Bobcats placed fourth as a team at the Iowa Alliance Conference Tournament on Saturday at Des Moines North.

MHS totaled 154 points in the 10-team invitational, following Fort Dodge (248.5), Ottumwa (181) and Ames (161.5) to the finish line.

Anderson improved to 34-4 for the season with Saturday’s 3-0 showing. He pinned his first two opponents in the first period to reach the finals, where Class 3A’s 10th-ranked Bobcat held on for a 1-0 win over Daniel Zeoh (30-8) of Des Moines East.

Anderson was one of four finalists for Marshalltown, as Lucas Bantz (126), Nicholas Wise (132) and Dalton Zednichek (165) also reached the title bouts of their respective brackets.

Bantz moved his record to 30-9 this season with a 2-1 day, starting with a first-round bye and a semifinal pin over Des Moines East’s Camron Bennett. Tenth-ranked Sam Davidson (15-6) of Fort Dodge foiled Bantz’s title hopes with a 17-2 technical fall in the finals.

Wise (30-7) got to the Alliance finals for the second year in a row, this time advancing with a first-round pin and a semifinal decision over Dalton Doud of Ottumwa, 1-0. Seventh-ranked Kate Butrick (29-6) of Fort Dodge denied Wise the title with a 6-0 decision.

Zednichek (30-9) posted a pair of first-period pins to reach the 165 finals before suffering a 6-0 loss to Hale Rhodes (19-10) of Mason City.

Marshalltown got third-place finishes from Damien Rodriguez (113), Carson Wright (150) and Michael Narvaez Correa (175), and Kenton Niehouse came in fourth at 144. Colby Cross collected fifth at 120.
