Marshalltown’s boys swimmers still had plenty in the tank on Thursday night.

The Bobcats are working hard to peak in time for the upcoming district meet but times kept dropping in a 102-68 win over Indianola in the regular-season finale at the MHS pool.

Marshalltown won seven events, including three wins each for Lincoln Barker and Charles Gilbertson.

Bobcat head coach Mike Loupee was surprised to see the quality of the all-around performances.

“They’re swimming tired,” Loupee said. “Charlie Gilbertson is dead, and he gets a lifetime best in the medley [relay], lifetime in the IM, lifetime in the 100 fly. That gets us coaches excited to see guys swimming at their best times when they’re tired and we should see some really good time drops at districts.”

Barker won the 500 freestyle and Gilbertson was victorious in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Gilbertson and Barker were also part of the winning 200 medley relay team along with Sam Greazel and Michael Lechnir; Barker added a win on the anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay following Jacob Seberger, Cohen Thatcher, Sam Greazel.

Lechnir won the 100 freestyle and Greazel grabbed gold in the 100 breaststroke.

Loupee indicated there are still two slots in the district lineup that are up for discussion between the coaches before the Bobcats descend on Mason City for the district meet. Qualifiers from the district meet on Saturday, Feb. 3 will advance to the two-day state meet at Iowa City Feb. 9-10.

“I’m pleased that we’ve got enough competition within the team that we’re still wondering about those things,” Loupee said. “That’s good energy, good competition, and it makes them strong.”

In the meantime, Loupee half-joked that he’ll lose sleep thinking about that which is out of the Bobcats’ control: weather-related practice cancellations or illnesses that may throw a wrench into the best-laid plans.

One matter without question is the leadership shown by captains Lincoln Barker and Carson Snyder as the Bobcats prep for next Saturday’s big meet.

“They did a nice job picking their leaders this year,” Loupee said. “They encourage their teammates and make sure everyone has a place from the upperclassmen on down, and make sure they know those positions are just as important as anybody else.”
