SPORTS SHORTS: Second half sends MCC men to road loss

MOLINE, Ill. — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team got outscored heartily in the second half of Monday’s 86-71 loss at Black Hawk College.

The host Braves (12-15) trailed by one, 34-33, at halftime before taking it to the Tigers in the second half. Black Hawk won the second half 53-37 to score a 15-point win.

Three players scored at least 20 points to pace the Braves. Jase Whiteman and Jamauryus Bradford-Gates combined for 10 3-pointers and scored 22 points apiece for Black Hawk. Stephen Reed piled up a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds to go with nine assists and six steals.

Mekki Sisk led MCC (8-20) with 14 points, six assists and six steals. Jion Fukushima added 12 points off the bench, and Joe Scott totaled 11 points in the Tigers’ third straight loss. Angus Ole chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Iowa Lakes goes coast to coast to top Tiger women

ESTHERVILLE — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team fell to 0-19 in conference play after Wednesday’s 75-53 loss at Iowa Lakes.

The Tigers (3-26) got outscored in all four quarters and were swept in the season series by the host Lakers (8-19, 4-14).

Mia Sao-Martinez scored a game-high 21 points off the bench to lead MCC, and Nyajah Orr added 11 poitns in a reserve role. Destiny Sao-Martinez added eight points, while Abigail Gradwell had six points and six rebounds.

Alexandria Wolff had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead Iowa Lakes, and Emma Kanz added 16 points.

MCC plays its regular-season finale at home on Saturday, hosting second-ranked Kirkwood at 1 p.m.
