SPORTS SHORTS: Comet girls make off with medals in home triangular

UNION — The BCLUW girls’ golf team was at it again, hoarding all the hardware from a home triangular on Friday at South Hardin Recreation Area.

Lindsay Beeghly won medalist honors with a 6-over-par round of 41, Sydney Anderson won a cardback for second place with her 46, and the Comets defeated Grundy Center and East Marshall on the team tally.

BCLUW shot 186 to distance itself from Grundy Center (196) and East Marshall (259) in the three-team meet, buoyed by the two lowest scores. Leah McEwen (49) and Delaney Legg (50) added to the Comets’ final count.

Grundy Center got a team-best 46 from Avery Knutsen, while Leah Larson and Holly Lubbert both shot 48s. Ashlyn Kuiper’s 54 accounted for the final counting score for the Spartans.

East Marshall’s scoring rounds came from Delaney Ryan (59), Sara Weitzell (61), Clara Crouse (67) and Riley Anderson (72).

Mustangs and Comets split medal haul in Marshalltown

East Marshall swept the individual medals, but the BCLUW boys’ golf team won the meet.

The Comets edged out the Mustangs 175-183 on the final scoreboard to win Friday’s dual meet at Wandering Creek Golf Course despite East Marshall charting the two lowest rounds of the day.

Cody Weaver claimed medalist honors for the Mustangs and Jackson Bidwell lost a cardback for runner-up after both golfers shot a 1-under-par 35. Gage Searle finished out with a 54, while Kael Koch and Austin Crandon both carded 59 to contribute the final counting score for East Marshall.

BCLUW’s four scoring golfers all finished under 50, led by Zaden Eggers with his round of 40. Bodie Butler (43), Mason Martin (44) and Chance Cordes (48) helped the Comets capture the team competition.

Grundy Center boys golf improves to 6-0

WATERLOO — The defending state champion Grundy Center boys’ golf team improved to 6-0 with Thursday’s triangular victory at Gates Park Golf Course.

The Spartans shot a season-low 151 team score to defeat host Waterloo Columbus (159) as well as Wapsie Valley (200).

Grundy Center sophomore Judd Jirovsky finished with a round of 36, good for runner-up honors behind Columbus junior Drew Lindsay’s 35.

The Spartans had the four best rounds after Lindsay, with Jirovsky (36), Eli Wegmann (37), Sullivan Dirks (39) and Preston Martens (39) compiling the team’s best score of the season.

Central Iowa United girls stifle STC/EM, 10-0

TAMA — Ashlyn Finch scored four goals as the Central Iowa United girls’ soccer team stymied South Tama/East Marshall 10-0 on Thursday night.

Finch scored four goals on nine shots as the visiting Trojans (2-4) outshot the hometown Trojans (0-4) by a 25-5 margin. Bianca Lane, Brooklyn Yanske, Lilyan Hadsall, Mailey Short and Kaylie Andrews each scored a goal for Central Iowa United.

Sophie Comegys and Lane both had two assists, while Cassidy Smith made two saves in net for the shutout in a match that lasted seven minutes into the second half.

Evelyn Fonseca made seven saves in net for South Tama/East Marshall.
