SPORTS SHORTS: Single shot spurs Spartans to Schmadeke success

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center boys golf snuck past Dyersville Beckman by a single stroke for the team title at the Spartans’ home Bob Schmadeke Invite, hosted at Town & Country Golf Course on Saturday morning.

The Spartans scored 330 to Beckman’s 331; the Blazers’ Luke Harwick was the individual medalist with a 75, one stroke ahead of runner-up Judd Jirovsky of Grundy Center at 76.

Sullivan Dirks shot an 83, Eli Wegmann an 85 and Preston Martens an 86 to round out the Spartan scoring.

BCLUW was fifth with a 360 team score, led by Zaden Eggers tying for seventh overall with an 85. Mason Martin added an 87, Bodie Butler shot a 92 and Nate Bishop and Beau Towne each shot 96s for the Comets.

BCLUW girls win Bear Classic title

BROOKLYN — BCLUW girls track and field topped the standings in the Class A division of the Bear Classic Relays at BGM High School on Friday night.

The Comets scored 137 points, followed by East Marshall with 111 points and North Mahaska scoring 81.

Mallori Jones grabbed a couple gold medals for the Comets with a win in the 800 and as the anchor leg on the winning 4×800 relay after the baton had passed between Miranda Jones, Ceanna White and Elise Engle.

BCLUW also swept the throwing events, with Grace Farnsworth and Morgan Bergman bringing home gold in the shot put and discus, respectively.

East Marshall dominated the hurdle events on Friday — Cora Talbert won the 100-meter hurdles, Morgan Neuroth claimed the 400 hurdles and Talbert, Vaeda Bryan, Marisa Cahalan and Neuroth won the shuttle hurdle. The Mustangs added a win in the sprint medley with Mya Gould, Bryan, Makayla Hala and Sydney Hull on the carry.

GMG’s girls scored 30 points in sixth in the Class B division. Meskwaki was seventh with 12 points.

The Wolverines got a 2nd-place finish in the 4×800 with Reese Dieleman, Chloe Dieleman, Gracie Peak and Landry August on the carry. Dorothy Bear paced the Warriors with a win in the open 400.

East Marshall boys 3rd at BGM

BROOKLYN — A day after their team title at BCLUW’s home meet, East Marshall boys track and field claimed third at the Bear Classic Relays at BGM High School on Friday night.

The Mustangs scored 72 points, finishing behind champions Lynnville-Sully (118) and runner-up Montezuma (106). BCLUW scored 56 points to finish seventh.

East Marshall’s 4×400 relay closed out the night with the Mustangs’ only win of the night, Alex Jacobson, Cael Curphy, Blake Neuroth and Kaleb Grant were on the winning relay.

Grant added a runner-up finish in the open 800, Jacob Farrington, Carter Lavender, Neuroth and Cale Hungerford teamed up to finish second in the shuttle hurdle relay.

BCLUW won two events — Owen Myers in the high jump and the distance medley relay quartet of Alex Paxson, Carter Gallentine, Cael Keller and Cayden White claimed gold.
