SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys win at Cardinal Invite

NEWTON — Marshalltown boys cross country had three runners in the top five overall to win the team title at the Steve McDermott Cardinal Invite at Maytag Park on Tuesday.

Preston Johnson led the way for MHS as individual medalist, the first across the finish line in 16:37, followed by John Moellers in 16:45. Carter Nunn was fourth in 16:58 and South Tama County’s Barrett Jesina rounded out the top five in 17:12 for fifth.

Marshalltown scored 50 points, clearing runner-up ADM’s total of 63 and Grinnell’s 69 points in third.

Rounding out Bobcat scoring was Parker Gooding in 17th (18th overall) in 18:10 and Myles Goldman scoring 26th-place points in 18:35. Caleb Rasmussen and Isaac Cisneros posted non-scoring times of 18:59 and 20:14.

Marshalltown’s girls placed seventh with a 155 team score. Millie Heitmann steered the Bobcats with 15th-place points in 23:39. Anessa Morrison was 21st in 24:07, Kaitlyn Yepez Ramirez 38th in 25:42, Sophia Valdez Chavez 40th in 26:23 and Emerson Eastman was 41st in 26:36.

Comet volleyball sweeps GMG

GARWIN — BCLUW volleyball buzzed past GMG in a 3-0 sweep at GMG High School on Thursday.

The Comets, ranked seventh in this week’s Class 1A rankings from the IGHSAU, won 25-4, 25-11, 25-10 to improve to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in the Iowa Star South.

Grace Farnsworth slammed 13 kills for the Comets, Olivia Peters chipped in eight kills and Virginia Kaisand had seven kills as well as two total blocks.

Klayre Gallentine held down the back row with 13 digs and Raegan Crawford added six digs. Crawford was also 24-of-25 from the service line and three ace serves — Elise Engle added three more Comet aces.

Next up is a Dunkerton tournament on Saturday with matches scheduled against Waterloo Christian, West Central and back-to-back Class 1A champions Ankeny Christian Academy.

Vokes wins Grundy Center home meet

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center junior Emerson Vokes won his third cross country race of the season with a top finish at the Sam Iverson Invitational at Town & Country Golf Course in Grundy Center on Thursday.

Vokes completed the course in 15:45, more than a minute faster than runner-up Aidan Brady of Wapsie Valley and his second-fastest time of the season. Two other area runners finished in the top 10 overall — BCLUW’s Cayden White was eighth in 17:47 and Grundy Center’s Jayce Fryslie was 10th in 18:15.

The Spartans were the top-scoring area team as well, finishing fifth out of 14 complete teams with a 151 team score. Fryslie scored eighth-place points, Brayden Wallis was 26th in 19:48, Oliver Del Castillo was 47th in 20:56 and Daniel Hommel finished 69th in 22:39.

GMG was next in line scoring 197 points for sixth, Grady Dieleman led the Wolverines in 13th overall in 18:33 and Rider Kupka was 24th in 19:36.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck placed 11th as a team with 251 points; Devin Wrider was the lead Rebel runner in 30th overall, time of 20:03. BCLUW was 13th, led by White scoring seventh-place points.

North Tama’s Cayd Cooper was the top Redhawk finisher in 77th in 22:49.

Grundy Center girls 3rd at Sam Iverson

GRUNDY CENTER — Grace Storjohann led Grundy Center girls cross country to a third-place team finish at the Sam Iverson Invitational on the Spartans’ home course at Town & Country Golf Course on Thursday.

Storjohann was fourth overall in 20:57. Union’s Amilia Condon won in 19:03.

Evelyn Geerdes scored 18th in 22:54; Maddy Hendershot was 25th in 23:14 followed shortly after by Karlee Lynch in 26th in 23:15; Makenna Steinmeyer was the fifth scorer in 33rd, crossing the finish in 23:41.

BCLUW was seventh as a team with 183 points, paced by Kalia Stover in eighth at a 21:45 clocking and Abby Kemp 11th in 22:03.

North Tama finished 10th with 248 points, led by Rachel Murty’s 17th-place run in 22:49.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Katelyn Monaghan ran 35:26 for 84th overall.
