COLLEGE HOOPS: No. 3 UCLA escapes Iowa 67-65
IOWA CITY — Elina Aarnisalo made two free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining to give No. 3 UCLA a 67-65 comeback win over Iowa on Sunday.
Lauren Betts had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Bruins (26-1, 14-1 Big Ten), who trailed by 12 points twice in the third quarter before rallying.
Iowa tied it at 65 when Lucy Olsen made three free throws with 6 seconds left. Aarnisalo was fouled when she was tripped by Olsen after she had fallen to the court trying to defend.
Iowa had a final shot to tie or win, but Addison O’Grady’s 3-pointer fell short.
Kiki Rice added 12 points for UCLA.
Olsen led Iowa (18-9, 8-8) with 17 points. Hannah Stuelke had 11 points, and O’Grady and Taylor McCabe each had 10.
Drake drops Panthers in OT
CEDAR FALLS — Bennett Stirtz scored five of his 26 points in overtime to lead Drake to a 64-58 victory over Northern Iowa on Sunday.
Tytan Anderson had a basket for Northern Iowa to begin the extra period. Stirtz followed with a layup to tie it and his 3-pointer with 16 seconds left set the final margin.
Stirtz also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (25-3, 15-3 Missouri Valley Conference). Tavion Banks totaled 17 points and nine rebounds.
Anderson finished with 21 points, six rebounds and two steals to pace the Panthers (19-10, 13-5), who saw a six-game win streak end. Jacob Hutson added 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Ben Schwieger pitched in with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Mitch Mascari made 2 of 3 free throws for the Bulldogs with one second left to force overtime tied at 55.
Houston tops shorthanded Cyclones
HOUSTON — L.J. Cryer scored 28 points, Milos Uzan added 19 points and No. 5 Houston held on to beat No. 8 Iowa State 68-59 on Saturday.
Cryer and Uzan combined to shoot 18 of 27, including 8 of 12 on 3-pointers. Emanuel Sharp added 11 points for Houston (23-4, 15-1 Big 12), which won its sixth straight.
Milan Momcilovic scored all 16 of his points in the second half to lead a furious rally for the Cyclones (21-6, 11-5). Nate Heise added 12 points, and Tamin Lipsey scored 11.
Trailing by 16 midway through the second half, the Cyclones used an 18-3 run to cut the lead to 48-47 on a 3-pointer by Heise with eight minutes remaining. Houston responded with four straight points to push the lead back to five.
Iowa rallies to defeat Washington
IOWA CITY — Payton Sandfort scored 27 points and made 12 of 13 free throws to lead Iowa’s 85-79 come-from-behind victory over Washington on Saturday.
Although Iowa made 9 of 10 free throws to close out the win, Washington’s DJ Davis made it interesting by scoring 11 points on a jumper and three 3-pointers in the final two minutes.
Josh Dix scored 15 points and Brock Harding 11 for Iowa (15-12, 6-10 Big Ten). The Hawkeyes shot 47% and made 23 of 26 free throws.
Mekhi Mason finished with 19 points and Davis scored 17 for Washington (13-14, 4-12). Great Osobor had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
