G-R rips Bolts to reach regional final
REINBECK — Kennedy Brant scored a game-high 22 points to lead the eighth-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team to a 57-16 romp over Baxter in Friday’s Class 1A Region 8 semifinals.
The Rebels (20-3) advance to face Lynnville-Sully (18-5) in next Wednesday’s regional championship game at 7 p.m. at Nevada High School.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the opening period against Baxter (13-10) before burying the Bolts with its defense. Baxter scored four points in the second quarter, none in the third and four in the fourth.
Brinn Schneider sank three 3-pointers to contribute 14 points for G-R, while Elly Sieh scored 10 in the lopsided victory.
Kamdyn Krampe scored six points to pace Baxter, which was held to its season-low total of 16 points.
North Mahaska 58, Grundy Center 40
NEW SHARON — Fourth-ranked North Mahaska used a strong second-half surge to surpass Grundy Center for a 58-40 victory over the Spartans in Friday’s Class 2A Region 5 semifinals.
Grundy Center (15-8) used a 7-2 surge out of halftime to take a 27-26 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter, but the Warhawks (21-2) took off from there.
The Spartans were within four with a minute left in the third period but a late push by North Mahaska gave the hosts momentum that carried into the final stanza.
The Warhawks outscored the Spartans 14-4 in the fourth quarter.
Regan Grewe scored a game-high 16 points to lead North Mahaska, while Breckyn Schilling added 15. Six different players scored at least five points for the Warhawks, who advance to face Hudson (18-6) in Wednesday’s Region 5 championship game at the Roundhouse in Marshalltown.
Karlee Lynch came away with a team-leading 14 points in the Spartans’ finale. Ava Mundt added 10 points, while Kali Aldrich and Caturella Brown chipped in six points apiece.
