No. 25 Iowa Lakes puts away Tigers
The slowdown method of Iowa Lakes was too much, or perhaps not enough, for the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team.
When they needed to turn up the tempo, the Tigers couldn’t switch gears.
No. 25 Iowa Lakes broke free from a 47-all tie over the final six and a half minutes to make off with a 67-57 victory over host MCC on Wednesday night at the Student Activity Center.
The Lakers (8-3, 4-0) claimed their sixth consecutive win while staying unbeaten in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, sending MCC (3-9, 0-5) to its ninth-straight loss.
“We are a really good team, we just haven’t shown it yet,” said MCC head coach Dylan Longley. “I’m hoping it’s going to come. We’re feeling had for ourselves because we’re on a little bit of a slide, and that’s just not how it works at this level.
“It can get turned around very quickly, but we’ve got to be better listeners and put it out on the court.”
MCC trailed by as many as 11 points early in the second half but erased the entire deficit, finishing the third quarter on a 13-6 run that got the Tigers within three. Jaeda Turner’s 3-pointer with 6:30 remaining evened the score at 47-all, but her technical foul with 1:51 left helped the Lakers leap back into enough of a lead to finish off the win.
Iowa Lakes led 55-51 before leading scorer Zoey Wooten picked up her fifth foul with 1:57 to go. Olivia Heartwell hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the margin to three, 55-52, but Turner’s attempt to steal the Lakers’ outlet pass led to a foul call. Her reaction yielded a technical foul, and Iowa Lakes made 3-of-4 free throws before getting the ball back.
The Tigers nearly completed a defensive stand on the next possession, but Ariyanah Custard fouled Erica Welsh on her fadeaway 3-pointer just before the shot clock could expire. Welsh went 2-of-3 at the line to make it an eight-point game, and MCC got no closer than six the rest of the way.
Tavara Swonger went 10-of-11 at the free-throw line on her way to a team-leading 18 points for Iowa Lakes. Wooten finished with 17 points and Baakir Christian added 10 points for the Lakers.
Turner came in off the bench to MCC with 16 points and six steals, while Shenell Stewart finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Mi Amor McQueen added nine points before fouling out, and Kenijae Cherry added seven points despite early foul trouble.
“I think we learned that when we’re healthy we can play with the best teams in the country, period,” Longley said. “It’s the little things that matter.
“I think they know in their heart of hearts we’re there, but what they’re not understanding right now because we’re a young team is how important every little detail is. And that’s what this team beat us on.”
Iowa Lakes outrebounded the Tigers 39-30 and made eight fewer turnovers.
MCC gets another chance to turn around its losing streak with Saturday’s road game at Northeast CC in Norfolk, Neb. The Tigers are back at home next Wednesday, Dec. 17, with a game against No. 12 NIACC.
