SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall’s Kasal wins crown at Northwest Invite

WAUKEE — Freshman Kielly Kasal claimed the 100-pound championship to lead the West Marshall girls’ wrestling team to 13th place out of a whopping 24 teams at the Northwest Invite on Saturday, scoring 61.5 points.

Host Raccoon River-Northwest, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, piled up 248 points to win the team title, followed by second-ranked Cedar Falls (196.5) and fifth-ranked Lewis Central (133).

Kasal (29-8), rated No. 8 in 1A by IAwrestle, went 4-0 with three pins and a technical fall. She pounded 2A No. 7 Hannah Schmitz in the semifinals, 17-1, before pinning fifth-ranked Mya Van Beek of Raccoon River-Northwest 49 seconds into the championship match.

Reese Buschbom was the Trojans’ other placewinner, scoring third at 190 after a 3-1 day. Buschbom (28-10) pinned 2A No. 10 Emma Grossman of Carroll in the quarterfinals before falling to top-ranked Briar Ludeman of Cedar Falls in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Buschbom pinned No. 3 Madison Wright of Lewis Central in 2:21.

Courter wins, Trojans take fourth at Perry

PERRY — The West Marshall boys’ wrestling team powered to fourth place at the Perry Tournament on Saturday, led by Urijah Courter’s championship at 120 pounds.

The Trojans tallied 147.5 points, trailing only Class 2A No. 8 Glenwood (210), West Delaware (194) and Sergeant Bluff-Luton (193) in the 16-team event.

Courter (27-0), the defending 113-pound champion ranked No. 1 at 120 by IAwrestle, rolled through his bracket with three wins, including a second-period pin of 3A No. 4 Kayden Eller of Dowling Catholic in the title bout.

Jon Gonzalez (25-3), ranked eighth at 126, won three-straight before an 8-3 loss by decision in the championship final to Jayce Curry of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, who is rated sixth at 120. Kinnick Geers (22-9) picked up a pair of pins to reach the 150 finale before falling to No. 2 Ben Walsh of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Heavyweight Jacob Dare took fourth at 285, while fifth-place finishes went to Bryce Crawford (165) and Damian Ficken (190).

Mustangs’ Meling takes Hudson Invite title

HUDSON — Two local boys’ wrestling teams competed in the Hudson Invitational on Saturday, with East Marshall finishing ninth and South Hardin-BCLUW taking 10th out of 11 teams.

East Marshall scored 49 points while SH-BCLUW finished with 39.5. Class 1A No. 1 Don Bosco won with 251.5 points, followed by Nashua-Plainfield (192.5) and North Fayette Valley (157).

The Mustangs were led by a bracket championship for Jordan Meling, who went 3-0 on his way to the 138-pound title. He scored a pair of 2-1 overtime wins in the semifinals and finals to claim the crown.

Hayden Boles was fourth at 120, Alex Bautista took fifth at 215, and Max Slifer scored sixth at 144 for East Marshall.

South Hardin-BCLUW was led by 11th-ranked Garett Bruner, who fell to top-rated Hayden Schwab of Don Bosco in the 126-pound finals for second place. Ben Viles (175) picked up fourth place for the Storm, Olin Hupfeld was fifth at 120 and Beau Towne took sixth at 157.

Hollingsworth helps Storm girls to third at BGM

BROOKLYN — Taya Hollingsworth claimed a bracket championship as the South Hardin-BCLUW girls’ wrestling team scored third place out of eight teams at the BGM January Bash on Friday evening.

Hollingsworth, ranked fourth in Class 1A by IAwrestle, went 4-0 on the mat with four pins totalling 6 minutes, 13 seconds. Hollingsworth improved to 38-2 this season with a 57-second pin of Gilbert’s Cece Wagner in the championship match.

Kaitlynn Dickes (24-12) was the other Storm wrestler to reach the finals, falling to Gilbert’s Dzhesika Okumahba in the title bout at 190.

SH-BCLUW also got medal-winning performances from Layla Price (100), Leila Wedgwood (130) and Cheyenne Simmons (145), who earned third in their respective brackets. Khloe Neal (115), Brayleigh Gardner (120), Ceanna White (135) and Casadee White (140) finished in fourth. Hailee Robinson (105) and Makayla Dillavou (110) finished in fifth place.

Gilbert won the team title with 233 points, followed by North Mahaska (152.5) and the Storm (133.5). Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center was fourth (122).

East Marshall boys sink 16 treys at AGWSR

ACKLEY — Jackson Bidwell sank six 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead the East Marshall boys’ basketball team to a 77-47 rout of AGWSR in Friday’s North Iowa Cedar League meeting.

The Mustangs (8-3, 7-3) made 16 3-pointers in the win. Cody Weaver and Blake Neuroth both made three 3-pointers and scored 14 and 11 points, respectively. Weaver also had nine assists, five steals and five rebounds.

Mustang girls keep Cougars winless

ACKLEY — The East Marshall girls’ basketball team overcame a slow start to score a 41-27 win over AGWSR in Friday’s North Iowa Cedar League contest.

The host Cougars (0-14, 0-12) led 16-8 after the opening quarter but East Marshall surged to take the lead for good by halftime, 21-20. The Mustangs (5-8, 2-8) made it stick by outscoring AGWSR 11-2 in the third quarter.

Sydney Hull and Alivia Neuroth led East Marshall with 15 points apiece. Hull had nine rebounds, six steals and five assists, and Neuroth added eight boards. Ashtyn Wheater had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Wolverine boys wallop Valley Lutheran

GARWIN — GMG senior Rider Kupka matched his season-high with 27 points to lead the Wolverine boys’ basketball team to an 88-15 triumph over Valley Lutheran in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

Kupka was 12-of-12 from the field, going 3-for-3 from 3-point range, to lead GMG to the win. Ethan Klemesrud had 17 points, Easton Sash had 14 and Caleb Ferch 10 for the Wolverines (8-4, 5-3). Bodie Hutchinson netted a season-high nine points to go with six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Perry gets season sweep of Trojans

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team sustained its fifth-straight defeat, falling 65-57 to Perry in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

The Bluejays (3-10, 3-7) snapped a four-game losing streak by forcing West Marshall into 22 turnovers to earn the season sweep. Gustavo Drahos scored a game-high 23 points and Luke Adair had a career-high 21 points for Perry.

Sophomore Teegun Edler scored a career-best 21 points to lead the Trojans (5-8, 4-6), and Evan Siegert scored a career-high 15. Connor Kemmerer got 10 points and Ryder Gile had eight points and a team-leading eight rebounds in the loss.
