Born on April 24th, 1928, in Tama County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harold and Lura (Strong) Dobson. She received her education in the area of her birth at country schools and later LeGrand before graduating from the Green Mountain High School. Darlene received her teacher’s certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and began teaching at the country school she attended. When her family came, she stopped teaching to raise them until they were well into school. She returned to teaching 5th and 6th grade math for LDF and then LDF/SEMCO.
On June 14, 1953, she was united in marriage to Darrell Gene Hanner. The couple was blessed with three sons: Ken, James and David.
Darlene was always active in life. Teaching, church activities, card groups and family events were all precious to her. She was a member of the Carlton Brethren Church and the Birthday Club. In years past, she enjoyed mixed-league bowling with her husband.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Kenneth, of Beaman, brother Dick (Judy) Dobson, of Iowa City, and many nieces and nephews.
In death, she rejoined her beloved husband Darrell who died in 1978, her sons David (1982) and James (2013), her parents and step-mother Peg Dobson and sisters Carol Kouba, Mary Etta Fisher and Joann Katzer.
