VFW Auxiliary Post 839 holds April meeting

The April 2023 general membership meeting of the VFW Auxiliary Post 839 met at the post home on April 18. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Liz Polkiewicz, followed by the opening ceremonies according to the ritual. There were nine members present, each of whom was officers. There were no guests present and no applications for new members. Chaplain Donna Mitchem gave the Opening Prayer.

The May 2023 minutes and General Orders were read by Secretary Theresa Shepherd. The minutes stood approved, with no corrections made. General Correspondence: A Thank You card from Home Federal thanking the auxiliary for their business. Two separate letters of thanks from Iowa Veterans Home, one for the donation of a weighted blanket and wooden branch service coins, the second for a monetary donation. A leter from the VFW National Home asking for donations.

Deb Miller gave the Treasurer’s Report. The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as read, pending audit. There were no bills presented. There were no April birthdays.

COMMITTEES:

Hospital Committee: Deloris Clayton reported that IVH Bingo will be held at 9:45 a.m. on May 9. Help is needed. Arrive by 9:30 a.m.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A discussion was held to cut back the amount of Easter Eggs fo IVH next year. The VFW & Auxiliary Department Convention will be held June 1-4 at the Holiday Inn Des Moines Airport. With the completion of Unfinished Business, the National Home Prayer was recited by Mitchem.

NEW BUSINESS: A motion was made by Linda Fuller in the amount of $100 to donate to the VFW National Home. The motion was seconded by Diane Welch and carried. A motion was made by Deb Miller to approve giving $100 for the IVH Carnival. The motion was seconded by Fuller and carried. It was reported by Fuller that Welch will be having a retirement party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on May 7. Polkiewicz reported there will be a barbecue for the members of the VFW Post 839 in June. The Election for Officers was held by Secretary Shepherd. A motion was made by Judy Schiebel to retain the officers in their current positions with the exception of Guard Carol Ewalt. The motion was seconded by Miller and carried. Ewalt nominated Kay Bell as Guard.

NOMINEES FOR OFFICERS: President: Polkiewicz; Senior Vice President: Betty Needs; Junior Vice President: Schiebel; Secretary: Shepherd; Treasurer: Miller; Chaplain: Mitchem; Conductress: Fuller; Guard: Bell; Three-Year Trustee: Fuller; Two-Year Trustee: Deloris Clayton; One-Year Trustee: Welch. With the completion of New Business, Mitchem recited the Closing Prayer, and Polkiewicz closed the meeting according to the ritual. The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 16.
