United Way brings on new director

Sorensen

For the first time in 26 years, a new executive director will lead the Marshalltown Area United Way.

Board President Terry Gray announced Kendra Sorensen began her duties as the new director on Jan. 11.

“I’m grateful and honored for the opportunity to serve as the next executive director for Marshalltown Area United Way,” Sorenson said. “I’ve lived and worked in Marshalltown for the past 22 years and consider Marshalltown my home. I’m genuinely looking forward to working with the board, businesses, agencies and additionally other local organizations as we together, in a combined effort, continue making positive impacts in our community. I also want to extend the appreciation of Nancy’s 42-year commitment to the Marshalltown Area United Way.”

Nancy Steveson, the longtime director, will retire in January after joining the agency in 1978 and taking over as director in 1994.

Steveson plans to stay in the area and will work closely with Sorensen through the transition. This past year has caused many disruptions for United Way, not only in its fundraising efforts due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the organization was forced to leave its office location in the Fisher Community Center.

The United Way is temporarily housed in the YMCA’s Cultural Center building.

Despite everything, the United Way fundraising goal is close to being met and donations are still very welcome and can be made online at www.unitedwaymarshalltown.org or by mailing to Marshalltown Area United Way, 709 S. Center Street, Marshalltown, IA 50158.
