Celebrating a centennial

In 1952, our family moved to Central Iowa. In 1953 Marshalltown celebrated its 100th year of being a community, so our LeGrand family helped celebrate. Fifty years later, my hometown, Hawarden, had their Centennial (1983). After decades of absence, memories were still vivid. It was good to see the community again. Hawarden’s first name was Calliope, in 1866. Steamboats would chug up the Missouri river, enter into the Big Sioux, then head for Sioux Falls. Along the way, the ship’s Calliope would belt out tunes. That’s how we became Calliope (Cal-e-ope.) Many towns across Iowa, went on raiding parties. Whoever possessed the County records, could claim the county seat. We were a poor town, many houses and buildings had not changed. After forty years at Fisher, I retired. A friend coaxed me to come paint at McGregor’s warehouse. Mornings must begin with a solid breakfast so I would stop at “Tremont on Main Street.” After three years at the warehouse, retirement came again. 25 years have gone by since my McGregor days. Recently, we decided to eat at Tremont. The waitresses made us feel appreciated. They assured us we had come to the right place: I had already found that out. I was in school with two of their grandfathers, in Le Grand. So my plea to you folks is to come eat at this unique eatery and enjoy some wonderful conversation and cuisine. J.P. and Jennifer would invite you to be part of this Uptown, every-day event. What a treat to walk by those jars of coffee beans enjoying that home-town atmosphere. Oh yes, don’t forget to tip the girls for they are worthy of your money. Laughingly, they might even say so! SERIOUSLY, they are good people. Being a waitress is not always easy. We found that communities around Marshalltown have good folks too, some are even famous! That is a quote from one happy granddaughter. It was good to see the progress of my hometown and it was good to come back to Marshalltown. For 25 years, we traveled around the country visiting and site-seeing. On a whim, we decided to eat lunch at the Tremont. After 25 years, it was good to see J.P. and Jennifer again. Our food was delicious and the waitresses made sure we knew we made the right choice.
