SPORTS SHORTS: Comets collect two conference titles, lead locals in 4th

LE GRAND — The Grundy Center boys’ track and field team ran away with the NICL West Division meet title on Thursday night, piling up 225 points to distance itself from the field.

South Hardin was second with 132 points, followed by BCLUW (105), East Marshall (77), AGWSR (32) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck (7).

Grundy Center won 15 of the 19 events, including all seven relay races, on its way to a convincing conference crown.

BCLUW was led by a pair of individual champions, as Connor Lynch claimed the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 7.98 seconds, and Logan Aicher won the high jump with a winning leap of 5 feet, 10 inches. Aicher was one of four jumpers to clear the winning height.

The Comets collected second in five relays (4×100, 4×400, 4×800, sprint medley, distance medley), while Tyler Bracy placed second in the 100 (11.73). Noah Gallentine was third in the 400 (54.91) and fourth in the 400 hurdles.

East Marshall’s Paul Novotny won the shot put with a heave of 44-3 1/2, and he also took fifth in the discus (111-9). Joe Terrones claimed third in the 3,200 (10:45.65), Dane Thompson was third in the 400 hurdles (1:01.36), and Ethan Hassin soared 17-6 1/4 to tally third in the long jump.

The Mustangs placed third in a trio of relays: the 4×200, 4×800 and shuttle hurdle.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s only points came from Logan Giesking placing third in the high jump (5-10) and Paul Brockett running to sixth place in the 1,600.

Tyynismaa tallies 38 points, three titles at WaMaC meet

INDEPENDENCE — South Tama County junior JoJo Tyynismaa won three events and finished second in another to lead the Trojans to an eighth-place finish at the WaMaC Conference Super Meet on Thursday night.

Tyynismaa accounted for 38 of STC’s 45.5 points on her own, winning three individual races and earning runner-up in another. She won the 100-meter dash in 13 seconds, the 200 in 26.68, and the 100 hurdles in 15.83. Tyynismaa also scored silver in the 400 hurdles, crossing the finish line in 1:09.02.

Emma Harwick tied for fifth place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches, while Gracie Vest was eighth in the long jump (13-10 1/2). Kortney Babinat took eighth in the shot put (33 feet).

South Tama’s only scoring relay was its 4×800, as Mary Kate Frakes, Gloria Mullen, Kayla Heck and Alyssa Chyma combined on a time of 11:06.98 for seventh place.

Vest wins long jump as STC boys take 10th at WaMaC

INDEPENDENCE — Payton Vest finished atop the long jump competition to lead the South Tama County boys track and field team to 10th place at the WaMaC Conference Super Meet on Thursday night at Independence High School.

Vest won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 9 3/4 inches, beating the second-place finisher by more than five inches.

The only other top-half finish for the Trojans came from their 4×800-meter relay team, as James Brant, Trusten Rosenberger, Johnathan Meyer and Tommy Tyynismaa took fourth place in a combined time of 8 minutes, 42.10 seconds.

Brant finished sixth in the 1,600 with his time of 4:47.37, and Eli Keahna also came in sixth in the shot put (44-10 1/2). Bubbz Palmarez scored seventh in the discus (124-6) and the STC 4×400 relay (Devon Slagle, Tyynismaa, Keegan Beyer, Rosenberger) came in eighth (3:45.79).

Mustangs can’t keep pace with Cougar girls on the links

ACKLEY — The East Marshall girls’ golf team was unable to defeat host AGWSR as the Cougars collected a 210-231 dual meet victory in Thursday’ NICL West Division match at Ackley Rec Club.

East Marshall’s junior varsity squad matched the varsity at 231 thanks to Torri Cox shooting a 43 — the low round for the day. AGWSR’s Alayna Hunt shot 44 and Hannah Homeyer added a 49 to lead the Cougars.

East Marshall’s varsity unit was led by Camy Weeks with a 52 and Marissa Duffy’s round of 54.
